Porn Collage Just Has a Great Ring to It
Normally when someone says “collage,” you think about a piece of poster board in a dorm room of hot guys' faces with random sayings or something far, far worse: a collage of muscle cars. Yes, I think we’ve all dabbled in the art of collage, making some pretty awful stuff. But when done right, collages can be pretty awesome. Take the work of Zoe Ligon.
Zoe Ligon is your usual sex toy shop owner who also does some art work and now her porn collage collection is currently on display at a gallery in Brooklyn. And if you are wondering why on earth would anyone would want to do collages from old porn mags like the people from Vice wondered, the answer is simple: to hopefully change people’s minds about hang-ups about porn:
Porn has such a bad rap. While I understand why society sees it as taboo, it is really no more than a sexual tool. While there's a whole lot of shitty porn, there's a lot of really great porn out there with an actual focus on the vulva where pleasure is mutually exchanged (that's why I only watch videos starring Danny Wylde). But like I said, most mainstream porn is geared towards heterosexual men and gives all viewers an unrealistic depiction of sex. In a world where our sex education is severely lacking, people use porn as a learning tool in addition to an arousal tool and consequently walk away thinking it's OK to go ass to vaj or some shit like that. So yeah, I want to promote the idea that sexual imagery has the potential to teach us a lot and help us conquer shaming attitudes.
As you probably guessed, I find Zoe Ligon’s work pretty damn cool. While I don’t know if I would ever hang any of it on my wall (I probably would in the right room), I really believe this work should be seen. So, if you are in NYC, go check her work out at Supercheif in Greenpoint.
