The Reason Melanie Lynskey Got Nude on “Togetherness”? Lena Dunham

Whatever Got Melanie Lynskey Topless Is Great 

If I am being completely honest with you guys, and let's face it, you guys are probably the only people I can be honest with, the only two reasons I turned on the HBO show Togetherness (2015-2016) was Amanda Peet and Melanie Lynskey. And it would seem the person I need to thank for Melanie Lynskey getting nude on that show and giving me a reason to watch was Lena Dunham and her constant nudity.

I know, right, it sounds really odd. I don't know even know if Girls (2012-2016) and Togetherness were filmed in the same cities, but this wasn't one of those things where Melanie and Lena met in line at the studio cafeteria, sat down, and had a conversation about nudity. No, for Melanie Lynskey, it was a little deeper than that. Here's an excerpt from Bustle to explain:  

"A male friend said to me one time about Lena Dunham: 'Every time she takes her clothes off on her show she gets sexier to me,'" she says, as we chat on an early morning of Sundance Film Festival. "There is backlash every time she times her takes her clothes off, because people are disgusting. But she's like, 'F*ck it. I have a great body. I have sex. This is what it looks like when you're naked.' It's so exciting to know that she's not just sitting back and being like 'Well, I won't show it anymore.'"

Yes, seeing Lena Dunham without her clothes over and over and over again made Melanie Lynskey want to highlight her beautiful body in the same.

"You don't need to be as awesome and naked [as Lena Dunham] all the time, but I love that she does that. I tried to do that on Togetherness. They had to beg me to keep my top on," the New Zealand-born actor jokes. "I'd be like, 'So, now? Now?' she says, miming lifting up her shirt.

This might be the first time I've ever heard someone say that Lena Dunham's nudity inspired them to get nude themselves. Sure, Melanie Lynskey had done a bit of nudity here and there before Togetherness, but with her awesome boobs (and Amanda Peet's awesome boobs) I don't know if anyone would have tuned into that show.

So...thanks, Lena Dunham. That felt weird to say.
