The first surprising thing about "Ashes to Ashes" is that it is a porn noir with an Irish voiceover, like "Miller's Crossing" if the whole movie had taken place in that bathroom.

But this Playboy TV series, featuring the Czech porn dude George Uhl as private dick John Ash (Uhl doesn't speak in the movie - another actor overdubs his thoughts) is just the sort of thing for people who claim they watch porn for the stories.

Ash is on the case of Veronika Lake, who each morning wakes up with a page from the "Book of Sins" stuffed in her pocket. These are the Seven Deadly Sins we're all intimately familiar with, except they have new and exclusive packaging away from the source volume, like if you carried a mini-dictionary around that just had the Rs.

Lake is compelled to act on these sins so, for example, she is driven to masturbate with a dildo when her page of the day is Vanity. (Some of us don't need books.)

And Ash and friends follow Lake through porn versions of Gluttony (milk poured on her) and Envy (a twosome becomes a threesome), waiting to be included in the final sin of Lust but, true to its noir intentions (and admirably so, for porn), Ash only gets the girl in a dream sequence.

Presented in repetitive snippets that betray its television roots, "Ashes to Ashes," originally released in a softcore version in 2003, is primarily a showcase for the stunning and ripe Veronika Lake who. to quote a fortune cookie, would be welcome in any gathering.

Another surprise is that Lake, who also went by Veronica Lake, Jewel, and Veronica Sage, is a California girl from sunny Van Nuys. Her IAFD listing drops off around 1998, when she was 25, and then picks up with this movie which, depending on where you look, came out anywhere from between 2003 and 2005. I suspect the original XX movie ran on Spice in the late 1990s and just came out in various DVD editions, the latest from Viv Thomas, which specializes in The Glamorous Ones.

No matter what year this movie came out, or what name the girl from Van Nuys goes by, it is worth a look for Veronika Lake, for whom no sin would be asking too much.

I live in Los Angeles and love it here. But I know that those little bits of tenderness and magic that populate Steve Martin's movies and Tom Petty's songs about L.A. are few and far between.

In other words, experience has proven otherwise.

Despite this, I really want to go to the Czech Republic and find the bar where the aggressive nymphos of "One Night Stand" hang out.

Where but in the Czech Republic, I ask you, can a man with a "Suck My Dick" shirt have unprotected sex with two women who pick him up at a bar, one of whom is Barbara Voice, for whom I would gladly arrange a green card wedding?

Where but in the Czech Republic can an oversexed trollop pick up the indifferent and possibly gay DJ and bring him back to the home team?

"One Night Stand" was made in 2004, which by American porn standards was like 1994, which by my standards is just right. Everyone looks healthy and happy and juicy because, though they knew about 9/11 in Europe in 2004, they didn't know about it in America in 1994. Get what I mean? It's like they were all just glad to have survived the Northridge Quake.

While Groucho Marx avoided joining any club that would have him as a member, well, you finish that sentence because I have to pawn all this IKEA furniture and take advantage of those super-low fares to Europia.

I do not know why this series is called "Members Only." Does it have to do with the fact that Viv Thomas primarily shoots girl/girl titles and this one has cocks in it? Or does it have something to do with the fact that I just today signed up for another year of AAA and the gang at the Auto Club decided to send me this instead of Westways? Regardless, all I know is that Sylvia Lauren might as well not be wearing those Daisy Dukes at all.

Checking In To John Chalk's "Hotel Fetish"

Following my first AVN convention in 2003, I tried to stay at every Vagabond Inn in the country and found each had the same delightful old man/hooker or old man who is a hooker smell as the one in Las Vegas. So you could say that I, too, had a hotel fetish. (Ed. note: As opposed to a Motel Fetish, which presumably involves stalking Dita Von Teese around the country and plucking stray hairs out of the bathtubs in the rooms she stays in?)

But it is not the same as that of John Chalk, for whom "Fetish" is the name of the hotel, rather than the hotel as object of his obsession. Even if it were, he'd probably find a place to put some Euro-lesbians in it, because he works for Viv Thomas.

Director Chalk took the story of the former Soviet Union's "Hotel Fetish," a bordello for the service of KGB agents and dignitaries, and put together "reconstructions" of some of those gentlemen's favorite turnons.

I hate to say it, but the Nazis were kinkier. According to the revelations in this movie, the KGB were more into voyeurism, lingerie, first-time lesbians, and putting whipped cream on their parts, just like the Bogue Chitto Sheriff's Department. No wonder the Wall fell; theirs was such a softcore world.

But the setup is a good one. Whether or not the shaded women speaking Russian and Magyar were actually former prostitutes is irrelevant because the framing device is pretty effective. They also are sure to say they loved their jobs so as not to seem exploited.

When I was a freshman in high school, our history teacher was passing out examination books. About halfway through his pile, the colors changed from blue to pink. A kid named Dennis said, "Mr. (X), I don't want a pink one," to which Mr. (X) replied, "Dennis, some day you'll find that you want a pink one all the time."

I had no idea what this meant, but knew it had to be dirty. I was not surprised to find out that Mr. (X) got fired the next year from a school system where no one ever got fired, even the teachers who still hit us.

Still, he was right.

That is what I think of when I see the word "Pink", and I wonder if my freshman history teacher would appreciate this three-disc-plus-one compendium of Portugal-based Viv Thomas' Sapphic adventures.

Disc One, "The Innocence of Lesbian Love", concerns Jo, an impressionable student boarding in a Budapest rooming house. She is greeted icily by the housemistress' daughter, Ella. Her mother apologizes. "I'm sorry. That was my daughter."

Not knowing a lot of the players makes watching this collection intriguing. We know we are not watching the European version of a Pink Visual video; everyone is toned and feminine. In fact, there are no men whatsoever in these four videos.

The performers speak English about as well as most of their Porn Valley counterparts, and it is fun to watch porn that was made in places other than the 20 or so overexposed Porn Valley rental McMansions.

It turns out that there is nothing innocent about this boarding house. Both mother and daughter are on the make from Day One. If the daughter isn't exhorting newcomers to brush her hair (wink), mom is insisting on drawing hot baths for her guests, looking over her shoulder tartily all the while.

The housemother really is a predatrix. Under the auspices of conducting a medical examination of a student who thinks she might have contracted "diseases" from a boyfriend, Mom bags another one. The movie doesn't really go anywhere, but who cares? It achieves what I wanted "Suspiria" to accomplish, but with no blood. And in terms of vivid portraits of inappropriate authority figures, it was just like being back in high school.

I have never seen the above position before. In boy/girl porn I guess that would be called Double-Secret Reverse Cowgirl.

Thinking of booking passage to Hungary? Don't bother. "We don't like boys," Mom says.

Disc Two contains "The Loss of Innocence". Now Jo is living in Portugal and Katie, one of the boarders from Disc One, comes to visit. Beyond that it is difficult to tell who-all means what to whom, although there is a hot mom (Anoushka) who resembles Anjelica Huston's "Grifters" character in her Monte Carlo period.

"Ella!" Anoushka cries (Ella is there for some reason). "You're my daughter's friend!"

"Step-daughter," says the kittenish Ella.

Taken by itself, the first disc has just enough plot to sustain a porn movie. It seems odd producers felt the need to revisit these characters, as if consumers were clamoring to find out what happened to Jo. Her and Katie's characters could have been renamed and the movie would have seemed more coherent. Most porn movies collapse under the weight of their own plot; a sequel's worth of plot is ridiculous (I can't wait to see Pirates 2).

But the sex is great. Anoushka is a tasty vamp, and Ella seems to be the ingenue fatale in this one.

Disc Three features "A Lesbian Odyssey". Mom - the boardinghouse mistress - from Disc One now runs an inn with Ella. It's Like "The Gilmore Girls" but less frustrating. People come and go. A redhead appears. Jo doesn't. Maybe there were contract issues and she wanted a producer's credit and script approval, like Vin Diesel.

In that "Lesbian Odyssey" doesn't seem like a sequel, and in that the performers speak Magyar with English subtitles, it is a more effective movie.

But the fourth disc ties it all togeher like Jeff Lebowski's rug. There are prequels and interstitials that rewarded the 45 minutes of fast forwarding I did with the previous three discs, documenting Ella's first Hungarian love as well as a wonderful kissing scene and a lot of unedited footage.

This series has no truck-driving lesbians, no living-in-a-cabin lesbians, no state-worker-on-disability lesbians, no Janet Reno lesbians, not even any Ally Sheedy or Jennifer Beals lesbians. But I guess that is like requiring Madeleine Albright straight girls in my heterosexual porn.

The name "Peaches" has a long and noble pedigree in the porn business. No less a personage than Robert Evans declared his favorite porn movie ever to be 1978's "Pretty Peaches" (sadly, no longer available), starring the ripe Desiree Cousteau. My wife once compared a scene between the compact Denis Marti and the voluminous Lauren Phoenix to "an ant crawling up a peach". Still, I didn't know what to think when we received Viv Thomas' "inside peaches" here at the Fleshbot Porn Valley compound, simply because the lower case on the box cover confused and frightened me.

Turns out all I had to do was watch the girl/girl movie to make the determiniation that the (Portuguese speaking?) Peaches, seen in six scenes written by fans, needs to be extradited here immediately. - GP
