Never one to shy away from stories about naked ladies, the Daily News has a piece on Ms. Lee, who's just starting up in NYU's creative writing department. Though heavy on the fluff, the article does reveal some interesting facts: Lorelei is from Buffalo! She's been in over 200 scenes! She's been nominated for 3 AVN Awards! Her classmates are a-okay with her job!

Okay, it's mostly just fluff. But whatever: we're very happy to hear that Lorelei's pursuing her academic interests (and doubly glad to hear that she's living in the city we call home). And very happy to see that the Daily News has given some extra attention to a woman we've been swooning over for years.

Of course, the '20s of "Speakeasy" aren't like the ones we remember from the history books: the dapper dans and gangsters are now transmen and butches, and the flirtations in this speakeasy have a decidedly queer (and kinky) bent. And public sex wasn't the norm in the '20s we remember...but maybe we've just been reading the wrong history books.

Though it's not heavy on plot, "Speakeasy" has enough storyline to carry things along: detective Billy Castro descends into the queer underground to investigate the titular speakeasy, and finds himself submerged in a world of porn noir. Lorelei Lee and Tomcat fuck in the bathroom, Jiz Lee and Dallas Fivestar perform amazing acts of suspension and gushing, bartenders Cyd and Mustache Malone go at it as only two transmen can, and—in the final scene—Billy himself gets the girl, wresting Lorelei from the arms of Tomcat (and getting a punch in the face in the process). And through it all, the speakeasy queers play cards, arm wrestle, and dance with each other to a wonderfully old timey soundtrack.

With the help of videographer Morty Diamond, Trouble's created a wonderful looking film: the footage alternates between black and white and color, with the storyline progressing in old-timey greyscale, only to bloom into full color when the sex scenes begin. The sex scenes themselves are also wonderful to watch—artistic in the best possible sense, with some of the most heated moments arising from the fact that we can't see every inch of flesh in all its clinical glory.

At just under an hour and a half, "Speakeasy" bucks the trend of trying to cram as much action as possible into one small DVD—and its a decision we applaud. In contrast to some of bloated 4 hour compilations we've experienced, "Speakeasy" is a tight, well choreographed production: every moment matters, and the production leaves us just satisfied enough—full, but not stuffed (which is just the way we like it).

Lee enters the year of her Saturn Return today, and not a moment too soon. "Everywhere I look in San Francisco I find hot lesbian sex," says Madison Young, our Huell Howser of vagitarian culture. But it is a city of contrasts.

"San Francisco is known as a hotbed of lesbian and gay culture," Young says. But lest you think Journey's City by the Bay is heterogenous, "it's also a city of lust, love, and random sexual encounters that lead to explosive orgasms."

No doubt this tidbit will help San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom in his bid to be California's next governor.

Young's first stop is Dolores Park, known as a "Dyke Park" and a perfect spot to show off one's monkey bar skills and read Rilke (probably ironically, dead white male and all, but he gets a pass because of the "Maria").

A helpful travelogue for tourists more interested in a Lombard Street of the Heart, "Lesbian Life" weaves its way through lesbian garages, coffee shops, and tattoo parlors, often connecting each scene with a character from the previous one.

And if residents sometimes complain of that 49-sq. mile thumb of land feeling claustrophobic, they can get some consolation they share the foggy peninsula with old friends like Lorelei Lee, Shawn and Jiz Lee from the Crash Pad, and Dylan Ryan from the Strap-on Motel.

Sadly, Young only appears as the narratrix, not as a perfomer. But have no fear: In addition to the hot lesbian sex going on everywhere in San Francisco, each resident seems to be reading Young's cover story in Spread.

Bobbi Starr is a schoolteacher with a secret in director Visual Blurr's Very Important Porn Movie, The Whore Within Me. From the moment we hear Starr's voiceover, about how all her life she did the right thing and if anyone could ever guess what goes on in her mind, we know that the digital crackling of the film, "Ringu"-esque buzzings and jumps, and the sepia filter will combine to give us one hell of a porn think piece.

"Would they believe their schoolteacher likes getting punished for the bad things she's done?" she asks. "God, I'm such a whore."

And yes, I guess she is. With freshly-painted face, Starr goes to a warehouse to be spanked and violated by Christian, who treats her most harshly. Conversely, could he have ever dreamt she was a schoolteacher??

The movie unfolds with several scenes of women telling the camera, the director, or themselves how and why they are promiscuous (with examples), and to the extent that we believe them they are more or less compelling. Shot over the span of a year by Blurr, The Whore Within Me seems to be a labor of love that now and then loses its focus. This does not mean that it is not immediately better than many porn movies; it just breaks some of the rules it sets up for itself, and that is a little distracting.

Meanwhile, Leighlani Red, a Natasha Lyonne-looking student in Starr's class, wonders how she can possibly write an essay about a life-changing event when she, herself, is a whore?

"Do I write about getting banged by the dumpsters?" she asks. Not if the essay is about "David Copperfield," but if the dumpster-banging really changed you, well, sure.

The sex scenes mean something, and they are masterfully shot by Blurr, who in the credits admits he was once studio New Sensations' warehouse guy. But Blurr throws a lot extra at what are already very good sex scenes; it does seem like they would be just as effective if they weren't so affected with editing tricks.

Lorelei Lee's scene is wonderful. In her Why I Am a Whore segment, she describes sucking off a friend when she was interrupted by a Very Special Guest, and how she chose to deal with it. Whether or not the story is true, it's an intriguing story, and we want to see what Lee does next.

"Nobody understands why we do the things we do," says Lee. "I like it when people treat me like a slutty piece of meat."

Blurr shoots his performers warts and all. Each is pale and easily bruised; there is no one in the movie a viewer would accuse of phoning in her scene.

Adrianna Nicole's suburban housewife deadpan is very credible, even though she is far from the suburban housewife ideal in real life. That is why she is an Actor.

"How do you tell your husband of eight years that you're a whore?" asks Nicole, cashing in on her double-team fantasy. "I guess that's why I'm telling you."

Finally, Madison Young plays the Ultimate Whore, crusing the streets of the northeast San Fernando Valley looking for the Aged to fuck her in the ass. She finds Dirty Harry.

"My body is a tool," reports Young. "And I love guys using it to get off. Sex is all I think about. It's an addiction."

While "The Whore Within Me" is not a feel-good porn movie, it is also not so earnest with itself that a viewer could forget why he or she is there. It paints a picture of these performers, who identify themselves by name, as along for the ride on their uncontrollable urges. because of the narrative setup, the viewer is asked to believe the story, and some performers have a better story than others.

One thing is certain: you expect Sasha Grey to show up in every scene, whispering "Yes, but I'm also a whore."

"I needed to write," Lee explained when I asked why she suspended her work for films such as "Interracial Hole Stretchers", "Upload", and "Submitted for Your Approval". "So I took some time off to focus on that."

The result is a gig with the Sex Workers' Art Show, a touring production that might be coming to your town in January and February. Lee joins "I Love Dick"'s Chris Kraus, Annie Oakley, Tre Vasquez, and Krylon Superstar, among others, on a 26-city tour showcasing staged readings and performances of the members' work.

The tour begins in Portland on January 17 and hits LA a few days later. Prior to this, Lee visited the AVN Expo to reconnect with a few friends.

Lee, 26, took her porn name from Marilyn Monroe's character in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes".

"You're not one of those performers who looks at the business with an especially jaundiced eye."

"No," she said. "I was never on the superstar track, but I also have a lot of people I really like, and I missed them."

Lee lives in San Francisco where I caught up with her as she was folding zines. She went to school and worked as a waitress during her break. She has said that she likes to check in and make sure that she can still do other things.

Lee reunited with fetish-friendly friends Annette Schwarz, Adrianna Nicole, and Madison Young in Vegas, and deems the reunion trip a qualified success.

"I always feel absolutely exhausted after the first day there," she said.

Meanwhile, Leach kept a personal record of the Not So Rich and Famous.

At the opposite end of the carpet performers were kept in yet another holding pen.

Former performer Joe Lawrence and signees of his talent agency were the last to walk the red carpet. Much of the press had left at this time since the awards show was two hours late, but no porn star was left behind.

This movie showed up when we expected to see "Pirates 2" but, frankly, we found this much more accessible and less fraught with high expectations, which means that it arrived without hype. "Babysitters" also has the largest amount - four - of Digital Playground's contract girls in 2007.

Maybe in future iterations of Fleshbot's constantly-changing page layout we will get a sidebar. If so, this movie would be in its own category under "Best Celebrity Sex Tape". No great shakes as compared with other standard-issue porns, "Amy Fisher" is nevertheless hands down the best celebrity sex tape this year. Why? Well, there's sex in it, for one, and Fisher is the embodiment of the Long Island hot MILF aesthetic. Watching this movie you will say, "I could shoot Amy in the face - but not with bullets."

Wicked has had a lot of expertly-directed, slickly packaged movies this year, including "Operation Desert Stormy" and "Coming Home", but Carmen Hart was adorable in this modest "It's OK to Enjoy Sex" movie for couples. Of all the contract girls, Hart is the most reminiscent of the groovy porn stars of antiquity, like Marilyn Chambers, Seka, and Christy Canyon.

Director Jim Powers narrates an often chilling backstage look at some of his sets with a combination of weariness and glee. While Powers usually directs rougher fare which you might expect to spawn breakdowns, tears, regret, and fights, his sardonic humor has a place in each porn company. This movie reminds us that for every high-gloss example of empowerment through porn, there are fifty times as many stories that confirm porn's detractors' worst suspicions.

"Fuck Mr. Thermopyles," says Manning to Lorelei Lee. "Fuck him!"

Evan Stone is also in the cast as Thermopyles' nemesis, Messr. De La Soul. Manning edges him out in the ham department, but just by a little.

If only Randy Spears and Stephen St. Croix had also been in the cast, James Lipton would have been required to tape a show on the set.

"Fucking Mr. Thermopyles" would have been a much better title for this movie, employing the hot-five-years-ago gerund formula of movies like "Kissing Jessica Stein", "Chasing Amy", and "Finding Forrester".
