Sticky Business At The West Coast Fetish Ball

This weekend saw over a thousand some odd people (ok, mostly odd — but in the good way) gather at Hollywood's Henry Fonda Theatre for the First Annual West Coast Fetish Ball, sponsored by Syren Latex and JT's Stockroom. Many of our posts on shibari and rope bondage come with a implied "don't try this at home" warning—it's implied because most of you non-Boy and Girl Scouts wouldn't know how to tie a half-hitch to save your life. The highly-skilled nature of the sport means it's not always easy for beginners to get in on the tightly-wound fun, but there are places you can go to learn the tricks and tools of the bondage trade. The Chicago Rope and Mummification Club (also know by the delightful moniker CRAM) doesn't actually exist anymore, but their old website still does and it's a nice resource for rookies who want to pick up some techniques, terminology and safety tips. As we learned the hard way after our first batch of interns escaped, the only good knot is a secure knot, so you better know what you're doing before you start.

"Lovely Andrea" @ Documenta 12: In Search Of Asagi Ageha

The video and photographic installation "Lovely Andrea" by Hiro Steyerl now on view at Documenta 12 in Kassel documents the artist's search for a photograph of herself in rope suspension bondage that was taken when she was 19 years old; not incidentally, it also serves as an introduction to the work of Japanese bondage artist and fetish model Asagi Ageha, who helped Steyrl in her quest to find that lost photo. As far as installations in international art exhibitions are concerned, we suppose Steyerl's piece is interesting enough, dealing as it does with issues of identity, bondage, suspense and dependency. But we're more hooked on Ageha's body of work, which in addition to over 700 fetish performances in Japan over the last few years also includes appearances for Kink.com's Water Bondage and HogTied.com and several DVDs. That's the kind of art we can definitely appreciate.

Shibari, or more accurately kinbaku, is descended from the ancient martial art of hojojutsu. It has a fascinating history, with various styles of restraining a person being used depending on factors like their social status, the crime committed, physical size and strength and the likelihood they may attempt escape.

Shibari is thought to have been used as a sexual practise from around the late 1700's. It is less about sadomasochism than it is about the eroticism of restraint.

Shibari.info is a nifty little site with tutorials on some of the more common tying techniques, which you'll also find at Japanese Rope Report (though the latter has a horrid frame-based page design—the author should be tied up himself).

When I say that kinbaku isn't about the SM, I'm not talking about the Japanese AV industry, where being tied up on its own would probably not be enough to sell massive numbers of DVDs. So it tends to go hand in hand with all sorts of other genres and fetishes, and generally amounts to highly entertaining erotic abuse of the utterly helpless. One can only assume the pay is reasonable.

AV studio Dogma has a series called "restraint chair trance" where actresses are tied up and subjected to various bodily fluids as well as being poked with different things. They also have something called an "SM laboratory" to check out if you're into this kind of stuff. There's a members only section which I didn't bother checking, and as always it helps if you read Japanese, but they have some sample galleries which are quite nice.

Dogma is known for their bdsm themes and features actresses such as the cute-as-a-button Mayura Hoshitsuki, whose pastimes include being tied up over a toilet and face-fucked until she vomits repeatedly and stars in films with catchy titles such as "Lolisuparezu" (that's "Lolita Complex Sperm Lesbians" to you, bub) and "Anal Trance DX". As usual when we come across this sort of stuff, there's one little question that we can't figure out the answer to as we admire these photos of and by Flickr user Awai Yuki; The pictures themselves are fantastic—they're self-portraits of a young Tokyo woman who enjoys shibari and other light bondage tricks. We don't even mind that there's no explicit nudity or that the subject's face is usually teasingly obscured by her hair or a tilt of the head; the images and the girl are still beautiful, and the sexy poses certainly pique our interest. No, our only question is: who's tying the ropes? Automatic camera timers can do so much, but if she ever needs help with any of those knots, we just might be able to recommend a volunteer.
