The kind souls over at TLARaw have put together a "smutionary," a glossary of all those dirty words you've never heard of and didn't really want to have defined. We'll admit that math isn't one of our strong suits, and advanced algorithms and bar graphs involving economic data aren't exactly the sorts of things that get our juices flowing. In a casual survey among some of our friends and acquaintainces (some of whom are actual sex workers already) we discovered that it's actually pretty damn accurate—and that some of us shouldn't quit our day jobs just yet. The Wiki concept may not have been initially developed for porn, but of course there's no reason why it shouldn't be used to help map the galaxy of smut out there. Unfortunately, the barely six week old Wiki For Porn has a ways to go before it becomes a truly useful "gateway for all porn lovers to enjoy porn without coming across spam and doing endless searches" as per its mission statement: the content so far is limited to some fairly dry entries on sexual practices which you shouldn't need a Wiki to tell you about ("A deep throat session may even go 'balls-deep', a colloquial expression denoting the complete envelopment of the testes satchel, as well as the penis itself"), a porn site listing or two that sound like they were lifted from press releases or other review sites ("Log on to this site and delight on over flowing photos and videos of girls getting wild anal sex and more", reads the one for AssTraffic.com), and a few porn star biographies that were cut and pasted from Wikipedia proper. (And what's with publishing porn stars' real names in their bios? These people use aliases for a reason, folks.) Still, any Wiki is only as good as the contributors who work on it, so we're hoping this gains momentum and becomes a more comprehensive resource before too long. Because our bookshelves are getting really crowded lately with a few too many massive sex-related reference tomes, we're excited to hear that the venerable Kinsey Institute has announced that its International Encyclopedia of Sexuality is online. It's a great scholarly (but very readable) resource featuring sexual demographic information for every country in the world, so you can learn about boinking in Antartica, the rarity of fetishes in Nepal and "autoerotic behaviors and patterns" in Ukraine. Getting all this info online is a pretty massive undertaking, so it's happening in stages, with completion slated to happen in spring 2007.
