In a welcome development to story we first heard about last year, the Dutch culture minister has decided that it's OK to show porn on Dutch public television since the films in question have been "characterized by connoisseurs as artistic" and thus don't merit any sort of censorship. We're still petitioning our local PBS affiliate to screen "Rim My Gape 3" based on what we consider to be its exceptional artistic value, but they're not returning our phone calls for some reason. We adhere to what we like to call the "two click rule" when deciding which photographers to feature here on Fleshbot: if we don't encounter any exposed skin within two clicks of landing at their website, we move on to the next name on our list. So it was a good sign when we visited Dutch photographer Ingrid Baars' online portfolio and were greeted by a smiling topless model splayed across her splash page; surely there would be more where she came from? Well, yes and no: while frequently smiling and often topless, Baars' cheerleaders, strippers, and swimsuit models are also distended, fragmented, flayed, and otherwise enhanced via the magic of digital manipulation, leaving them somewhere in that grey area between sexy and disturbing. Which is just fine by us ... and which just goes to prove once again that sometimes rules are made to be broken.

A public television station in The Netherlands is planning on screening "Deep Throat" as part of a celebration of the history of erotic cinema next month, drawing predictable protests from a Christian group (who apparently isn't concerned about all the explicit violence that's shown on Dutch TV too). We're considering protesting the fact that all we get to watch on public television are nature documentaries — doesn't all that money we donate during PBS pledge drives every year count for anything? Surprisingly enough, not everyone loves Viagra: the Dutch town of Breda recently renamed a street after some dirty-minded residents complained that its name bore a more than passing resemblance to the name of the famed anti-impotence drug. One of the great things about this job is that porn and sex are so universal they provide an excellent way to learn about other cultures. Isn't that much more elegant than our crude use of the word "commando"? Calling her "the world's most famous porn star" might be a stretch for a generation bought up on Jenna and Tera, but there was a time when you couldn't swing a Betamax tape without seeing Sylvia Kristel, who created the title role of the French softcore classic "Emmanuelle" in 1974 and starred in several of its sequels throughout the following decade (as well as in mainstream releases like the classic "Airport '79").

In a new interview this weekend to mark the publication of the English edition of her autobiography "Emmanuelle Uncovered", Kristel talks about her post-"Emmanuelle" life and career, which despite several "cocaine-fuelled, drunken years living with (actor) Ian McShane in Hollywood" and losing out on millions of dollars in movie profits turned out to be a relatively normal one after all, even if she seems pretty wistful about the role that made her a star: in another interview published last week in the Telegraph, she says "You're much better off as a love goddess to die around the age of 40 ... You save yourself a lot of trouble."
