Zaftig Pussycat: "Voluptuous Biker Babes" Revisited

Carlos Batts has released "Voluptuous Biker Babes", a trippy combination of "Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas," "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," and - I don't know - Lucha Libre that features drag queens, desert dance-offs, and the ample talents of April Flores, La Cholita, and Bunny de la Cruz along with the leaner but no less tasty Audrey Hollander and Veronique Vega.
As we mentioned last month, Batts shot the film in roughly the same area as did Russ Meyer when the latter filmed "Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!" in 1965, and "VBB" features just as much eye candy, if not more (considering it's in color). Flores, La Cholita, and de la Cruz are trash-talking badasses who get stranded in the desert. And they must love their way home.
In their wanderings they meet psychedelic tea merchants (Otto Bauer and Audrey Hollander) and an arid extra-dry dance troupe, an encounter that leads to a wrestling match with drag queen Pa Fuschia.

Sexploitation Clip Of The Week: Russ Meyer's "Cherry, Harry & Raquel"

For this week's clip we take a dip back into the Russ Meyer catalog for a movie that we think artfully demonstrates the skill and vision that made him such a great director. The teaser is a little long, but it does provide a tidy synopsis of the entire story and all the characters, so you really do come to understand the themes and symbolism of the film as a whole. However, if you look beneath the surface and carefully examine the subtext, you can get an even deeper sense of the true message of this saga: It's about boobs. Lots and lots of giant boobs. The man was subtle, but trust us, it's there.

Sexploitation Clip Of The Week: "Common Law Cabin"

How could we have a regular feature on the classic films of the sexploitation era and not include the work of Mr. Russ Meyer? We will never understand how just one man was able to find so many outrageously-endowed beautiful women in one lifetime without access to some form of voodoo magic. However he did it, just knowing that Russ was involved in anything makes us as excited as the announcer on this trailer who can barely contain his joy or the volume of his voice. (Warning: Dangerous cleavage levels ahead!)

Since it's now the future (or something), we're in an optimistic mood this week and are looking forward to even more of our favorite bits of pop culture ephemera making their way to places like YouTube in 2007—especially where boobs are concerned. And things are off to a great start with news that this UK documentary on legendary breast impresario Russ Meyer is now viewable online: "Russ Meyer: King Of Sexploitation" includes interviews with several of Meyer's most legendary stars as well as such eminent mammarian authorities like streaptease queen Dita Von Teese—along with fascinating tidbits like the fact that Meyer shot four days of film for the Sex Pistols (who were apparently huge fans of Meyer's classic "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls") before the project went "belly up" (or should that be "tits up"?). There's also the requisite speculation on the reasons behind Meyer's boob fixation, though we have to admit that we're much less interested in those issues than we are in the movies they made possible. Truly a worthy homage to the man and his art. And, of course, those boobs. - AR/JD
