While the kids in New York are having sex in bathroom stalls and celebrating the joys of "Hookin' Up", Julia Ayabe and her team of seasoned fetish veterans in Tokyo have been busy organizing regular events for the long-running Tokyo Perve, described as Japan's "hardest core" underground fetish party. Actually, it seems like things aren't really as wild and crazy as that might sound: Julia says that there isn't as much bloody medical play as there used to be, the polite crowd generally apologizies when they do things like break chandeliers during their BDSM demonstrations, and the dress code is more about what people are wearing than what they aren't (no bare bottoms allowed). But in their half dozen or so events every year—many of which you can relive via photo galleries on the TP website—the Tokyo Perve team still have plenty of opportunities to prove that the Japanese really are as kinky as we think they are: in fact, as Julia says, "They're by far the kinkiest. Like really fucking kinky." So, like, now you know.

Today is Mardi Gras, which depending on where you live could mean colorful parades, drunken revelry, or just another Tuesday staring at your computer as you try to kill time at work. Every city has hotels that specialize in, er ... "limited time" stays, but they're usually disgusting flop houses that you wouldn't stay in for twenty minutes even if you were paying by the hour. Not in Japan, however, where love hotels are an art form in themselves. Many of the rooms at these places look like abstract art installations as they're lavishly decorated, often in some unique theme that will cater to just about every taste imaginable. (The Hello Kitty bondage room is always a popular choice.) Photographer Misty Keasler's new book "Love Hotels" document Japan's more interesting guest quarters, and her photos will also be featured in upcoming shows at several US art galleries. Some of these places look so nice that we could actually see ourselves staying in them for a couple of days, although even we might get sick of the noise coming from our neighbors. Eventually, you just gotta get some sleep.

Annual German fetish party Boheme Noir very generously has the text on its site in English explaining what we missed in Berlin last weekend: "(B)urlesque and baroque, fetish and fantasy, goth and glitz, body mods and cyber, rubber, fags and freaks". But we're pretty sure that even if it were all in German we'd have been able to figure it all out, since we're preternaturally inclined to find any gallery pages wherever there's even a hint of nudity. For the last three years, they've sponsored glittery fetish-themed events in Berlin and you can get a taste of all the goings-on via their website. It's a documentary of their culture, you know.
