Their rationale? They felt it was sexist, and objectifies a woman's body in order to sell clothing.

But what makes this story really interesting is that Bitch isn't your ordinary "no naked ladies, please" feminist magazine—as things go, they're pretty pro-sexy. In the past, they've run ads for porn sites (including a porn site run by yours truly); they've also sponsored burlesque festival Tease-O-Rama (a move they got a good deal of flack for).

So what, pray tell, makes this specific act of sexiness one that's anti-feminist? Is it the fact that the sexiness is gratuitous? Is the pubic hair just a bit over the line? Is it the line about good things in pink boxes? We're scratching our heads over here—but we'd love to hear your thoughts on the issue.

<![CDATA["The Naked Feminist" Opens A Porn Time Capsule]]> Completed in 2003 and a South by Southwest honoree in 2004, women-on-porn documentary "The Naked Feminist," considering a handful of porno-generations has passed, plays like an old science fiction movie in which the future we're living in is different from the one it imagined. It is a treat nonetheless.

The Naked Feminist

Director: Louisa Achille
Featuring: Veronica Hart, Nina Hartley, Christi Lake, Chloe Nicole, Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle, Ginger Lynn, Marilyn Chambers, Seymore Butts, Betty Dodson, Veronica Vega, Mischa Allen, Abby Ehmann, Kylie Ireland, Sharon Mitchell

Review by: Gram Ponante

Aussie filmmaker Louisa Achille did something wonderful and revolutionary with this movie: she was able to present anti-porn feminists in a way that didn't make them seem shrill while giving a podium to some of the adult industry's most levelheaded and articulate champions, particularly Veronica Hart, Nina Hartley, Betty Dodson, Carol Queen, Sharon Mitchell, Annie Sprinkle, Candida Royalle, and Kylie Ireland.

Despite the widening blur dividing porn from mainstream entertainment, docs about the adult industry tend to lionize one side while demonizing the other. Unfortunately, this does nothing to convince the choir of the other's point of view. "Naked Feminist," while clearly pro-porn, neither paints porn's detractors as ridiculous nor shies away from showing porn stars exhibiting doubt.

Shot in 2002 and 2003, "The Naked Feminist" makes the obligatory AVN convention trip to Las Vegas for interviews with Hartley, Julie Meadows, Ginger Lynn, and the one of a kind Chloe Nicole, tracks down Veronica Hart at her office at the late, lamented VCA Pictures (VCA and Adam & Eve seemed to have a lock on the porn talent and clips presented), and found Dodson, Sprinkle, and Queen elsewhere around the country.

Seymore Butts appears briefly, but the remainder of the dozens of interviews are with women, who discuss everything from how porn affects relationships to the notion of solidarity among female performers (the doc devotes a chapter to "Club 90," a support group for porn actresses). We also hear some scary stories (Sharon Mitchell's rape by a crazed fan, Veronica Hart's first scene, in which the director went too far), some unsurprising ones (Chloe was high in her first scene), and a standard issue Dodson heartwarmer, in which she explains to her electrician why his unsatisfied girlfriend left him.

Of all the quotes that illuminate the ambivalence of attitudes about porn, my favorite is Carol Queen's:

"The notion that a woman who revels in her sexuality is free and open to anyone is really the toxic heart of the slut role or epithet and it's the part that the conservative feminists - and we - agree is problematic and wrong and needs to be trained out of the culture," Queen says. "And the culture is reluctant to do that because that is what keeps the slut role dangerous."

"Naked Feminist" has not found wide distribution,so its debut this week on iTunes (rent it for $2.99) will be the best opportunity the hour-long movie has had to attract eyeballs since its release.

Since so much time has passed, however, the new-porn aspirations of interviewees have either already come to fruition and just as quickly become something else - How is Hart's feminism different from Joanna Angel's, which might itself be different from Sasha Grey's? - or faded altogether. Hart is no longer making porn movies, which is a shame (luckily, Candida Royalle is), Chloe is no longer in the business, Marilyn Chambers is dead, and Annabelle Chong's hope that the solo-woman Internet site as a ticket to financial security might have been true in 2003, but is not now.

That said, "Naked Feminist" provides generous dollops of all the women in the adult industry who have something to say about it (circa 2003) and the message is still a compelling one today.

<![CDATA[Fourth Annual Feminist Porn Awards: They Are The Champions]]> Alas, we were unable to make it out to Toronto this weekend for the fourth(!) annual Feminist Porn Awards—but we're pleased to see that many of our Crush Objects made it out—and won awards!

We're still waiting on the full list of winners, but from Jiz Lee's recap, we know that Madison Young was named an Indie Porn Pioneer and awarded Best Kink Movie (for "Perversions of Lesbian Lust"), Dylan Ryan won Female Heart Throb of the Year, Courtney Trouble was awarded Most Diverse for forthcoming flick "Roulette," and Pink & White Productions picked up awards for Steamiest Trans Scene (in "Crash Pad Series Vol 2: Unlocked") and the coveted Movie of the Year, for none other than "Champion."

We couldn't have picked better winners ourselves.

<![CDATA[This Is What A Feminist (Porn) Looks Like]]> Well, the porn industry must be doing something right, because there are a record number of nominations for this year's Feminist Porn Awards. (Alternately, we suppose that feminists could be getting pornier—we're happy either way).

The full list contains an impressive 46 films, with more than a few of our official crush objects finding their way on to the list (hey, we have good taste in porn!). We're keeping our fingers crossed that next year's list is even longer.

Women like Joy King, Samantha Lewis, and Susan Colvin are all superstars in the porn business (with the emphasis on business). So much for that sausage party. (msnbc.com, via hotmoviesforher.com)

<![CDATA[Sex 2.0: Sexuality, Feminism, And Waffles]]> Because we can never have enough opportunities to get together with like-minded geeks online experts and talk about sex, several members of the Fleshbot Collective are considering a trip to Atlanta later this month for Sex 2.0, a one day conference focusing on the "intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality" which is also quite possibly the only event of its kind in the world to be held in a 10,000 square foot, fully equipped dungeon. Plus, we hear there are lots of Waffle Houses in Atlanta. Mmm, Waffle House. (event info @ sex20con.com; see also interview with organizer Amber Rhea @ sexuality.about.com)

<![CDATA[Feral Lingerie Models Caught In The Wild]]> We've often wondered why so many photographers we feature here have portfolios full of scantily clad models in environments where you wouldn't expect to find scantily clad models: lost out in the fields, traipsing through the forests, posing prettily among the sand dunes ... But finally, we've been presented with a logical explanation: they're feral lingerie models, photographed in their natural habitat. Which, quite frankly, is a relief. Here we were thinking all this time it was just a bunch of sadistic art directors getting off on forcing girls to scuff up their Mahnolos and tear their stockings walking through the brush!

<![CDATA[What Makes Girls Go "Nuts"?]]> The lad mag industry—a business that we're somewhat familiar with—gets a dressing down in the UK Daily Mail by a former Esquire editor named Rosie Boycott. (With a name like that, is it any surprise that she's pissed off about something?) The general thesis is that Nuts, Zoo Weekly, Maxim, Loaded, FHM, etc. are nothing but exploitative trash that marginalizes women and perpetuates negative attitudes toward them in young men ... but that maybe the women who willingly drop their bikinis to get a spot in the glossy pages are at least partly responsible.

We don't want to rehash the whole "stupid sluts/empowered women" debate here—you can read it yourself and make up your own mind, but we do take issue with one particular comment. She writes:

"No one - at the risk of looking oldfashioned and stuffy - is willing to stand up and question current behaviour.

Really? No one? Because from where we sit there's pretty much an entire industry devoted to doing just that. Hardly a day goes by that we don't stumble across someone who is wringing their hands over what MySpace, Girls Gone Wild, and beer commercials are doing to our youth. They may or may not have point, but if you can't hear them making it then you clearly aren't listening.

<![CDATA[Amber-On-Amber Action]]> When artist Amber Hawk Swanson was looking for a way to explore sexuality and feminism, while incorporating her own image to draw lines between reality and fantasy, she came upon a unique solution—paying $12,000 to buy a Realdoll that looks exactly like herself. Thus Amber Doll was born and the pair became the stars of their own on-going performance art piece. Not only has Original Amber filmed a documentary about the process of creating and caring for Fake Amber and not only have they re-enacted famous movie rape scenes for a photographic project, the two of them even got married in Vegas. (In matching dresses, of course.)

We're pretty sure there's a message in here about feminist attitudes of self worth and the objectification of women in our popular culture, but dang it if we aren't having a hard time suppressing our twins fantasy right now. Art or no art, anyone who has a Realdoll of herself is just the kind of kooky cat we want to know.

<![CDATA[Feminist Porn Awards: This One's For The Ladies]]>

We've been called a lot of names over the years, but one thing we rarely get accused of is being feminist. (Calling you "chicks" all the time probably doesn't help.) After all, feminists aren't even allowed to like porn, right? Well, some of them do—and not only does feminist porn exist, there's enough of it that they can give awards for the best of the lot. Twice! Tomorrow night, female-friendly sex shop Good For Her will host the second annual Feminist Porn Awards in Toronto. Unlike the Oscars, you can actually buy a ticket and mingle with some of the stars like Simone Valentino of "Afrodite Superstar" (pictured) and producer Peggy Comstock of Comstock Films. Plus there's a pretty good chance you'll get to see some good old fashioned smut. We'd go ourselves if wasn't for that passport problem, but if you're up in the Great White North you should do what you can to be there. When it comes to dirty pictures, these broads really know what they're doing. (Oh ... we did it again, didn't we?)

<![CDATA[Asian Princess Artifacts]]>

Our favorite thing about postmodern feminists (really, what's not to like?) is their willingness to put both boobs and brains into the equation when challenging stereotypes, and Asian Princess Artifacts has this strategy down to a T. In that vein, performance artist Gennifer Hirano has been a stripper and a fake porn starlet—and unlike most of everyone's favorite peroxide blonde and balloon-boobed real porn starlets, she did it to make a point about objectification and stereotypes and not just for the cash. But just because her website says "It's not about sex" (which she later follows up by emphasizing that "it's about power") doesn't mean that there aren't a few good nudie pictures of Gennifer's various performances and fine art projects. In addition to the fake porn starlet project, Gennifer has made a pinup inspired flip book, dressed up like Marilyn Monroe, and made a calendar featuring her posing on a car while wearing a bikini and eating a bowl of rice. Call it art if you want to; we just think it manages to be both smart and sexy.
