Burlesque Tourism With Michael Prior

Los Angeles burlesque darling La Cholita growls at the crowd and spins her tassels counterclockwise. Across the Pacific, Australian sirens throw on American drag and mix tight gingham blouses with sailor hats. Photographer Michael Prior gets the best shots from the footlights.

Based in Melbourne, Prior travels to international burlesque shows and photographs the dancers on and offstage, capturing the joy of performance as well as the athleticism involved in keeping those pasties from launching into the crowd.

His new book "Titzen Blitzen!" is an available-light travelogue through London's week-long Burlesque Festival, which drew an international roster of dancers. Sado vamps to naughty maids play to crowds that range from elegant to rowdy, which says a lot about burlesque's place as a living art form, as a "body type"-neutral treat, and as a mirror of class structure.

And that's all well and good, but I liked the women.

Zaftig Pussycat: "Voluptuous Biker Babes" Revisited

Carlos Batts has released "Voluptuous Biker Babes", a trippy combination of "Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas," "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," and - I don't know - Lucha Libre that features drag queens, desert dance-offs, and the ample talents of April Flores, La Cholita, and Bunny de la Cruz along with the leaner but no less tasty Audrey Hollander and Veronique Vega.
As we mentioned last month, Batts shot the film in roughly the same area as did Russ Meyer when the latter filmed "Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!" in 1965, and "VBB" features just as much eye candy, if not more (considering it's in color). Flores, La Cholita, and de la Cruz are trash-talking badasses who get stranded in the desert. And they must love their way home.
In their wanderings they meet psychedelic tea merchants (Otto Bauer and Audrey Hollander) and an arid extra-dry dance troupe, an encounter that leads to a wrestling match with drag queen Pa Fuschia.

"Voluptuous Biker Babes" Put Other Biker Babes To Shame

Carlos Batts is at it again: right on the heels of "Kiss Attack," he brings us "Voluptuous Biker Babes," a porntastic reenvisioning of the cult classic "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" (not to be confused with Quentin Tarantino's remake of the film, rumored to feature Tera Patrick.) Shot on the same location as its inspiration, the film features April Flores, La Cholita, and Bunny de la Cruz as a trio of dance divas who get lost in the desert and somehow wind up wrestling each other (naked, we hope!). But don't take our word for it: watch the trailer and see for yourself.
