Peter Acworth has a problem. He has impulsively made a promise to a very big client that he will film an epic swinger orgy at the massive Armory Building in San Francisco, which he happens to own as president of Kink.com.

Once he gets the go-ahead to begin shooting, he must then populate the event and dress the room, two things that anyone who knows Peter Acworth also knows he will have no problem doing. But, for purposes of this delightful, documentary-style porn Kink.com made in association with Private, we watch the British Acworth get all Hugh Grant nebbishy and tie himself into knots as the big day gets closer.

He approaches the always interesting Princess Donna in a bar. Here she plays a forgotten trophy wife. In a line that I will use shamelessly, he says, "If you are short of something to do, you should come to my sex party."

Various storylines unfold: a "Pina Colada"-style "I didn't know that you liked sex in public" misunderstanding between Mark Davis and his doctor (both show up at the Armory at the same time), a husband who thinks his wife is a prude, even though she looks exactly like Princess Donna, and a hapless cameraman whose real dream is to be in front of the camera, you know, fucking (when put to the test, he can't unload in time but, unlike in most porn, this fellow has a story arc).

Kink.com, which is known for hardcore fetish sites like Ultimate Surrender, Wired Pussy, and Men In Pain, is no stranger to suspension—as in naked girls dangling from ropes—but this is suspension of disbelief. We gladly check our cynicism at the door as the movie asks us to forget things we already know but then charmingly ties everything back together.

Orgy Day comes and the Armory looks great. A group of naked porn stars arrive, such as Sindee Jennings, Annie Cruz (rarely seen in Porn Valley anymore—it's good to know where she's been hiding), the adorable Sarah Shevon, beautiful, lush redheads Bella Rossi and Cherry Torn, and reliable porn dudes Mr. Pete and Derrick Pierce, all of them there to get the party started.

And that is what the final 80 percent of "A Real Swinger's Orgy" is: fucking, mixed with unobtrusive but satisfying plot resolutions.

Mark Davis, veteran woodsman that he is, cannot resist giving directions in a manner that would get a younger man kicked out of bed. Acworth, ever the fidgety host, flits here and there with seltzer bottles and drink orders, Sindee Jennings can be heard shrieking across the room, soaking all that nice antique furniture. At one point Mr. Pete is servicing Shevon ("Don't fuck me back or I'll come") when he hears Jennings caterwaul across the room and he shoots her a dirty look.

If this movie had been made 300 miles south in Los Angeles, the lights would have been too bright and the checks could not have been cashed fast enough. But we really are convinced that "A Real Swinger's Orgy" is the real deal, even with a little help from the pros.

So if you're not short of something to do, you should really watch this sex party.

Specifically, the California Employment Training Panel, which provides subsidies for training to make in-state corporations more competitive on a national scale. For years, Kink had used the program to provide its employees with video and multimedia training—but alas, they've now been cut off from this training.

What happened? It seems that a certain writer for the San Francisco Weekly decided to investigate why the state of California was subsidizing "torture porn"—and in the process, set off a chain of events that left Kink.com out in the cold. You can read the whole story over on the SF Weekly's website—but be warned, it's peppered with lots of poor reporting, judgmental talk about alternative sexuality, and, well, more poor reporting (though antiporn sources are quoted discussing the obvious abuse of Kink.com's models, not one of the models is quoted discussing his or her experience). A few sample quotes, just to give you a taste:

Riedel denies the victimization charge. "Most of our models have been around longer than the down economy," he said. "We go through an extensive interview process to make sure they're okay with this. We don't like working with models that aren't into this. If it's not consensual, it doesn't work."

San Francisco clinical psychologist Melissa Farley doesn't buy that. In 2007, she posted on her antipornography Web site, Traffick Jamming, the famous photograph of a hooded Abu Ghraib prisoner alongside a photograph she says came from Kink.com of a shackled, blindfolded woman apparently being poked with a cattle prod. "In this economy, this is something women would rather not do, but they feel they have to," she said. "This is a form of economic coercion. But people would rather not think of it that way. People think of it as a matter of rights, rather than ask the question, 'Should people have a right not to do this?'"

The company has passed itself off in articles in The New York Times Magazine, Salon, 7x7, and other publications as a hip, if esoteric, high-tech media startup. Yet its business plan is more medieval than modern, consisting, as it does, of giving people money if they'll agree to being on camera while being stripped, bound, impaled, beaten, and shocked.

"The Upper Floor" (along with corresponding website theupperfloor.com) is Kink's attempt to turn the top level of the Armory (aka Kink's headquarters) in "an Edwardian styled Great House, in which masters, mistresses and slaves will all have a role"—slaves like Julie Night, Jade Marxxx, Harmony Rose, and Sara Faye, it seems.

Granted, it's all an experiment—and a very ambitious one at that—so there's no telling how the whole thing will turn out. But if Kink's past projects are any indication, the answer is "very successfully" (and very erotically, too, we might add). We're looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds.

First, the bad (well, worst) news: of the thirteen layoffs, several were concentrated in the Production department—including two webmasters who were sent packing. Though we're not surprised to hear this—production is expensive!—we're still saddened by the news. Kink.com's high quality, in house production has always been one of its most appealing features (well, aside from the extreme kink), and we're crossing our fingers that these layoffs don't lead to a reduction in quality.

Which brings us to our second point: what led to the layoffs to begin with? Why, the same story we've heard over and over again, from mainstream companies across the country: during boom times, Kink.com expanded—so much so that when their revenues began to slow down, their profits disappeared.

And what about this idea of recession-proof porn? Are porn layoffs a sign that the economy is, well, that fucked?

We're going to go with a no... kinda. Yes, the economy is clearly in dire straits, but it's not solely the economy that's to blame for the porn industry's troubles.

The idea that porn is "recession-proof" is one that's oft misunderstood. The porn industry itself isn't what's recession-proof, it's the desire for porn that withstands economic woe. But with Pornhub and Redtube providing ample access to free hardcore content, high quality, studio-produced content can more easily be written off as a luxury—one that can fall by the wayside during tough times.

Recently laid off Kinkster Thomas Roche offered us another opinion:

I think the key to porn seeming recession-proof is that for years it was tied to organized crime, which has pretty shady ways of doing business. In the time that the vast majority of the porn industry has been above-board, both the economy and the tech sector have been growing at a rapid pace. In any given 3-5-year period, there have been new offerings and new products, and new developments in terms of what porn decides it can get away with, so there's always something new being offered. The economy pretty much couldn't compete with that until now. All recessions since porn became "legit" or semi-legit (in fact, back to the '30s) are a blip on the radar compared to this one. There is no period to compare this to.

The times, they are a-changin'.

Given the little we know about the layoffs, it's difficult to say what effect this will have on Kink's production. We can only hope that the surrenders will still be ultimate, the machines will keep on fucking, the pussy will still be wired, and that the piss will keep on flowing... and, of course, if anyone knows any details about the layoffs, please keep us informed!

Fleshbot: So what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like Kink?
Sabrina Fox: I definitely believe in being naughty and nice simultaneously. Naturally, there is a certain amount of shock factor that goes along with telling a complete stranger that I am a porn model when they ask me what I do.... SF: It really varies, as vague as that may be. Some days I prefer no lipstick and some days I want bright red... there's no rhyme or reason to it. That also must mean that I have severe psychological and emotional issues and what is more, I cannot be trusted. I have to lie, cheat, and steal because modeling alone cannot possibly support my horrible crack addiction. ;)

FB: Any fantasies you'd like to try out on camera that you haven't done yet?

Ariel X: There are so many things I love about my job. Can I use a separate sheet of paper if I run out of space? I love that I can pretty much make my own schedule.
