The latest in a series about a well-furnished apartment being used as a sex den by a group of Bay Area lesbians, "The Crash Pad"'s narrative is at first confusing because it is framed as a movie being watched on a computer by its editor. We watch as people come and go, trysting and remembering their hookups from the night before. At some earlier point, we assume, these women had names and back stories; now, all we know about them is that a key to the Crash Pad is a coveted thing.

Coveted but not because the Crash Pad is a lesbian utopia. The femmes sneer at the drag kings, territories seem fragile. And then Michelle Aston shows up! What is she doing here? Aston again does not take this opportunity to be a delicate flower; she treats her partnwer most harshly.

"Where do you think you're going, Little Girl?" Aston barks. The little girl gasps as the tattooed storm cloud of Aston descends on her.

"Crashpad" is clearly a movie made by lesbians who love lesbians, and the passion is catchy. Sometimes the filmmakers get so excited that we can even hear them whispering and we can see their cameras. All in service of getting us as close as possible to their subjects, which can't be bad.

It remains unclear at the end what that peeping movie editor is doing there, but one thing is certain: if the Abby Winters girls showed up at the Crash Pad, they wouldn't stand a chance.

Fleshbot: Back in 2005 we named you one of our Top Ten Hotties of the year. Has your life changed much in the years since we honored you—and if so, what's changed?
Aprella: Yes you did, and I'd like to take the time here to say "Thank You!"

My life is always changing and evolving. In the past three years I've worked all over the world from doing runway shows in France and screaming backup vocals in Italy to doing Fashion Week in LA and swinging high on aerial swing in my home town NYC. I like to keep my career and life moving. In 2007 I worked at least one week of every month out of the country. I love life on the go.

FB: You've been an artist's model, a nude model, a dancer, a singer, an actress, an activist, and probably even more things that we forgot to list. How do you make time for it all?
A: I just follow my heart and try to make the best choices I can for myself. Unfortunately I don't get enough sleep. The usual is 4 hrs or less a night.

FB: Where did you get your start as a model? Did you start as photographer's model and branch out into other areas, or did you follow a different path?
A: I was always interested in the art of photography. While snooping about camera equipment one day a photographer asked to take a test shoot of me. He then turned it over to an agency and it turned out that I was a look they needed. I was then booked for fashion runway shows and fashion editorial shoots. As I got more involved I discovered the world of couture high fashion and have since been hooked.

FB: How did you decide to model nude? Is the experience of nude modeling substantially different from modeling with your clothes on?
A: I strive to create more artistic looks with my work. I wouldn't call myself a nude model having almost never done a fully nude shoot. When I have done fully nude I am almost always covered with body painting giving the illusion that I am clothed.

With my modelling work I'm trying to create images that cause an inspired reaction be they nude and covered in body paint or beautiful high fashion. If I look at a photo and see nudity before I see creativity it's a nothing photo for me. I'm far more turned on by art clothed or not.

FB: Do you have any favorite stories from your years of modeling? Any photographers you love working with?
A: One of the funniest moments I've had as a model has to be when I was working with Gene Simmons of Kiss fame. Gene and I were in Times Square on top of The Hard Rock Café to do press for his show "Gene Simmons and The Family Jewels" Gene out of nowhere took my hand and made me grab his ass while he looked all coy with his finger over his lips for the cameras. Then the next day it was all over the celebrity gossip television show "EXTRA."

Every photo shoot and runway show carries its bag of fun memories for me. I love the people I work with and I have to mention one of my best friends, photographer River Clark as being my favorite person to do a photo shoot with.

FB: If you had to choose just one of the many areas you work in to focus on, what would it be?
A: I really wish I could pick just one thing to focus on. I'm always so jealous of those that have that one thing they love to do and they stick to it. Like my partner David Stoupakis. He's good at everything he attempts in the art world but he's known since he was a kid that he wants to be a painter and that's what he focuses on every day. For me it's just not that easy; in fact I'd say it's impossible for me to pick one area to focus on. So I guess I just focus on following my heart for a living.

FB: Do you have any upcoming projects Fleshbot readers should know about?
A: Zillions! I'll be home in NYC this Summer doing art sittings for Dr. Sketchy's and Runway shows with some local NYC lines. Like many of its predecessors, Kiss My Bliss features photos of both male and female models—and in some cases, both at the same time. The photos have an innocent, girl- or boy-next-door feel; the vibe is not unlike that of fellow Aussie site, Abby Winters. Fake tits and Lucite stilettos are nowhere to be seen. And yes, there is pubic hair.

The site is largely, if not exclusively, softcore, with an artistic bent. Though there are shots of couples, we didn't see any hardcore action (or even anything close: hard cocks are few and far between on this site).

There are still some kinks that need to be worked out; most frustrating: the site's navigation is unintuitive and cumbersome. But since Kiss My Bliss is new to the market, we'll give it the benefit of the doubt. It's exciting to see some a new entry into the catalogue of progressive online porn—here's hoping that the Australian version of altporn fares better than its American cousin.

As a veteran of altporn, this makes me cringe; but as a veteran of altporn, I also know she's right.

When I was a wide eyed nineteen year old with a digital camera and a dream, it was a different story: someone like me could (and did) start a porn site — one that, free from the pressures of the corporate world, could explore different territory from mainstream porn. But the dream is dead, kids. If you want to be in the online porn scene these days, you've got to have cash — and as a result, "indie" porn ain't so indie anymore.

So what changed?

· The Visa/MC crackdown. A decade or so ago, starting a porn site was easy: you got some web space, you took some naked pix, you found a billing agent to process your membership fees ... and then you sat back and waited for the money to roll in. But in fall of 2002, Visa and Mastercard decided to end the party. Declaring adult sites to be a high risk for chargebacks, they started requiring a registration fee to process payments for adult sites: $750 up front and $375 annually after that. While that's not big money for a large company, it's a substantial hit (and deterrent) for a small startup. (Bonus fact: The Visa/MC processing fees are the reason why you can't use PayPal to sell adult-themed products. So when PayPal cancels your account after it finds out you're selling used panties ... well, at least now you'll know why.)

· Stricter 2257 regulations. If you want to pose naked on the internet, you need to be 18 or older — and if you want to post naked pictures of other people on the internet, you need proof that all the people you're posting pictures of are at least 18. This used to be a relatively simple matter of getting an ID and a release form from everyone who modeled for you. Then the government decided to step in and make things a little more complex: claiming that they were fighting the evil menace of child porn, they started requiring vastly more complete (and complicated) records for online models. If you're a small company running a multi-model site, 2257 record keeping requirements (which require publishing a physical address online where those records can be inspected and keeping regular office hours so the DOJ can show up on your doorstep whenever they want to) can be brutal.

· That big bully, SG. You've heard about the lawsuits, you've heard about the exclusivity contracts, you've heard about how they basically "own" a big chunk of the altporn market. Even though they didn't invent the genre — there were lots of folks getting naked on the internet altstyle long before they launched, including me — they basically dominate the scene now: and they don't appreciate it when other companies try to take them on. And most of the time, their intimidation tactics work.

· In many ways, "Alt" isn't really alternative anymore. When I started taking it off online, it had yet to become a hipster pastime — it wasn't considered cool, and I didn't gain cred (at least not with anyone I knew in person) for doing it. Flash forward to 2004: SuicideGirls is mainstream, emo girls aspire to be porn stars when they hit 18, and a whole lot of people are looking to cash in on the next new thing in porn. Hence Hustler bankrolling a Burning Angel movie and Vivid launching Vivid Alt. Tattoos and piercings in porn used to signify a product that was female-friendly, feminist, and (dare we say it) empowering; now it's just another wrapper for the same old product.

This isn't to say that any broke kid with dreams of becoming a porn mogul can, if given the chance, launch a progressive porn site even a radical feminist could love. But as more and more barriers to entry get put up — economic, legal, or otherwise — fewer people are able to enter the market; and those that do are unlikely to risk their bankroll trying to create and promote a different kind of porn. Which, at the end of the day, may be the reason why the most progressive porn site I've seen in recent years comes to us from Australia.

Seattle's HUMP! Festival anonymous amateur porn films that are only screened during the festival itself (with a few excellent exceptions that make their way to the internets later). LA's Erotic Film Fest is a two-day conference featuring both discussion panels and curated porn selections from artists of all genres. And New York's Cinekink does much of the same, but with an ever-ongoing series of touring film screenings. Meanwhile, San Francisco's GV Amateur fest does one thing, and this year did it perfectly: a panel of sexperienced judges picked eight local amateur skin flicks, and gave prizes to the top three.

As it turns out, even amateur porn in San Francisco exhibits a pretty high standard of production values (many entries were from semi-pro filmmakers) and the selection encompassed the sexual diversity we love The City for. On hand in the VIP room were some of the films' stars (and judges) we've spent much mouse time with, such as Madison Young and Sadie Lune. Judges included and Pink and White Productions' drop-dead sexy dykestar Jiz Lee, along with Midori, Tim Gaskin, and Carol Queen, among others.

"Drawn Into A Fantasy" featured outrageously hot dyke action, with a director recently graduated from UC Berkeley's Film Studies department. Travis Matthews had us riveted with "Men", an "ode to Larry Craig" featuring a creepy-hot all-male bathroom stall jack-off segment set to the rhythmic dripping of a tap (faucet). One of our favorite entries wasn't visually explicit but instead had us laughing and uncomfortably horny all at once: stand-up comic Jeff Jacobson's irreverent "Superballs". And Fleshbot crush object Madison Young's "Writers and Rockstars" delivered the fastest, nastiest, kinkiest, and possibly most delicious hardcore, chemistry-drenched fuck of the night, with gorgeous Madison sucking cock, taking it rough and fucking a well-hung hot boy the way we've always wanted to see her go off.

Hot phone sex entry "Fine Wine took home a prize, and had a nice complex plot with a twist. There were many more, but we're glad for the food entry to go with our hooch: Sadie Lune's sweet BDSM lesbian short "Yum", a delicious montage of food-making and rope-tying, couscous and hot wax.

But the intermission entertainment provided by San Francisco burlesque performers Molly Molotov and Isabella Minx (from the Diamond Daggers) might have been the tastiest part of all, especially when the cute-as-a-button "Sugar" dancer accidentally popped a pastie ... yet somehow jiggled onward to a fine finish.

For two days, the LA Knitting Factory (clearly unaware that inviting porn people into their venerable establishment meant 48 hours of flashbulb-popping, boob-baring antics) turned three rooms into film screening areas and panel presentation spaces. All levels of mainstream — and a heavy handful of indy — porn peeps invaded to talk about themselves, which, of course, no one can get enough of.

The film fest portion ran the gamut from Porn Valley panelists to independent erotic filmmakers and artists giving a taste of the wider range of international, experimental and truly transgressive films and animation. Few outside the Valley were in effect; much of the fest showcased what I already knew about. But instead of the the mind-numbing fan fest of the AVN Expo, LAEFF '07 focused more on the porn (and its making) than the stars themselves (though the usual signings and industry trailers were fully represented, yo).

Films shown were in a range of actually exciting categories. "Artrotica" included new work by Martha Colburn, R. Kern, Bruce LaBruce, Eon McKai and Nick Zedd. The Best of CineKink NYC was a delightful collection of seven excellent shorts, including the yummy Honey and Bunny; I loved their inclusion of the biting but hilarious mockumentary "Dick Ho: Asian Male Porn Star". There were erotic comedy film shorts; an "Eroticore" clip collection with a 20-minute "Not Another Porn Movie" entry by Joanna Angel; a teensy bit of retro clips and more. We were especially excited to see San Francisco's Other Cinema represented in "Xperimental Eros", a collection of experimental shorts curated by Noel Lawrence featuring works by Craig Baldwin, Mike Kuchar, Sam Green and Bill Morrison.

Like any tech conference that features panels of old media makers and mini-celebs alongside the new media mavericks — and a smattering of artists and writers throughout — some of the panels excited and inspired, while others fell flat into porn's recurrent Navel Gazing Syndrome. Ron Jeremy made an early exit for another engagement, noted by another tattooed blogger through an unmuffled yawn; a panel of MSM porn performers were quoted for memorable quips such as "I just can't get enough of my job!" and "I don't have a thought," and confusingly, the panel actually stopped to point out a porn performer walking through the room to cue audience applause (applauding Joanna Angel, which we usually do with one hand, thank you very much).

That "Classics" panel was deliciously bitter by the end of its self-congratulatory session, and based on reports from embedded sources another panel of similar minds had degenerated into discussions of what kind of car they drove. Other panels showed filmmakers and artists hungry to reach new audiences with thought-provoking images, and — yes — even hot erotica. Old punks brought new values, and new online pornstars and rulers of MySpace like Dana DeArmond shaped longstanding discussions about who really looks at all this smut, anyway.

In all, the panels gave a nice snapshot of the state of SoCal tinged porn when it's rubbed up against the rest of the world's smut; the internal struggle the Old Guard is having when the internets are breaking down the walls between porn and its consumers; and what's happening when old-style porn distribution channels are becoming less and less the arbiters of content. Plus, seeing all that art porn, new features from indy artists and even the scary premiere of "Llik Your Idols" made us all quivery about porn, all over again. For a minute, anyway.

If you didn't know any better, you might think that first-time feature filmmaker Anna Biller's story of a swinging 70s housewife's sexual awakening was an actual lost movie by the likes of Russ Meyer or Radley Metzger. But Biller's "cult freak-out retro 1970's spectacle" is a wholly modern confection, one that's at least as notable for its period-perfect attention to set detail and costumes (the work of the director herself) as for its plot: "Barbi becomes a Red Riding Hood in a sea of wolves, and quickly learns a lot more than she wanted to about the different kinds of scenes going on in the wild '70's, including nudist camps, the hippie scene, orgies, bisexuality, sadism, drugs, and bohemia ... Whether you're looking for naked people dancing, alcoholic swingers, stylish sex scenes, a sea of polyester, Hammond organ jams, glitzy show numbers, white horses, blondes in the bathtub, gay hairdressers, or psychedelic animation, VIVA has it all!" We might have been more tuned in to "Sesame Street" than suburban sex orgies at the time, but thanks to Biller we can relive all that sexy 70s grooviness all over again ... for the first time.

Says Pulpo director Candela, "I used to work at a large media conglomerate, but they only let me answer the phones, and I wanted to direct." Which is exactly what she's doing now, while her husband is responsible for all the design and promotional material. There's a nice homespun quality about the first full-length hardcore release by director Vonn Fink and the hotties at RazorDolls that's keeping "Southern Cumfort" in heavy rotation here at Fleshbot Central this week. Maybe it's because cover babe Regan Reese looks like the girl next door (assuming you live in certain parts of Williamsburg or the Mission, that is) and fucks like a bona fide porn star? Maybe it's Fink's DIY aesthetic and talent for capturing real, uninhibited sex, something that made fellow porn auteur Jack the Zipper call him "the New Gonzo" right there on the boxcover? Or maybe it's just the grainy DVD transfer and patchy sound, which makes "Suthern Cumfort" look like something that was shot for web broadcast on, say, a hardcore altporn site ... but which also somehow makes what all those hot pierced and tattooed bodies are doing seem that much more genuine and raunchy? So it might not be the most polished title we've seen lately; still, as alt porn becomes increasingly slick these days, it's nice to see some folks still keeping it real ... and pretty fucking hot, too.

Despite the fact that we wholeheartedly support indie porn productions that make different looking smut, we can't help but roll our eyes a little when someone starts going on and on about "porn for women"—like men can't appreciate well-shot productions featuring sexy models who look (and fuck) like real people and not porn star caricatures? Snark aside, UK director Petra Joy's second film "Female Fantasies" looks so good we could eat it, or at least lick our screens: the action is hardcore, the performers look like they're enjoying themselves, and it's shot in an artful way that still doesn't prevent you from seeing everything you expect to enjoy in a porn movie. Whoever's fantasy it is, we're digging it.- AR

With a project called "JizzTank" and series of hardcore porn clips with titles like "The Empress of the Fist" and "The Tale of the Triple Donggg", you might expect Cream Productions to be just another Porn Valley outfit grinding out the sleazy smut.
