I have had paid memberships at sites like brazzers, realitlykings, Pornpros, NA and Killergram (great UK site) before. I normally stay for a few months and then get bored and want some more niche stuff and end up cancelling. Then get bored with niche stuff and the lack of updates and go back to the big sites.
In between I end up going for the free stuff. Features bore me, if I wanted to watch a film I'd watch a film, for porn I don't want plot, I like a little lead up like the brazzer stuff but if there isn't action in the first 5 minutes I'm off.
It'd be nice if the big sites did niche stuff better, a MILF/teacher and a MILF/Mom's friend site aren't 2 different sites. Maybe if they could license scenes from the niche site, maybe delayed from the niche site so those really into something still have reasons to go there. If they did I think they'd retain more business as people get bored of the Teen/MILF/Big Tits gravy train. A bit of varity would go a long way.
@Lux Alptraum: The music industry is good precedent. Allowing people to buy individual tracks from online stores that had millions of obscure tracks gave the consumer choice. Aside from piracy, consumers were given the option to buy an individual track for $0.99 instead of buying a whole album for $15. There's something similar going on in porn, only instead of buying clips, people find their happy ending in 2-3-5 minutes for free on the internet. Back in the day, when we oldsters had no other options, buying the physical product (Playboy, Penthouse, VHS tapes, and then DVDs) was really the only alternative. Now people can get the porn equivalent of an individual track for free at countless sites. So we shouldn't be surprised that the porn industry's revenue is crashing. It'll probably reinvent itself in a financially viable way...but I don't know how or when. Big portions of it might die off before the change happens.
I.E.B.N. The only porn I have paid for in the last 3 years is their streaming content and the DVD's I find on it. I consider the whole site a "try before you buy" godsend. I have bought more than a few DVD's after making sure it was hot enough through I.E.B.N.
It plays like the mutli-channel peeps like they had in Times Square years ago except you can scroll through a scene to see if it is even worth playing through in real time. Best idea for porn yet, IMHO
For me there are two categories of performers: Those i will gladly pay to be a member of their website (eg Justine Joli) and those whose scenes i will pick up if the movie looks good. So pay-per-scene, as you put it, makes sense. I'd rather pay $10 for Gianna Michaels scene in Big Natural Titties 3 than $50 for the entire feature.
The exception to this as a few others have mentioned is the standout series, for example Big Wet Asses. That i will pick up religiously because i know the content will be good.
I'm happy to pay for a quality website that's full of great content. I'm seriously considering getting with plumperpass.com. Until then, I'm content with hanging out at a couple of BBW/FA forums and renting the few BBW-themed titles that come to my local spot. And I wish there were more of those that were worth my time and money.
But seriously... well-crafted feature porn is far more enjoyable to me, and even worth paying for (if it has that high quality to it). It also tends to be the most expensive, as opposed to the latest gonzo, which can usually be bought on the cheap (comparatively-speaking). The old adage is usually true, though - you get what you pay for - but one takes a chance with the feature, whereas one usually knows what one is getting with Ass Worship.
I don't know... there has to be a happy medium in there somewhere - HQ feature with gonzo-style sex. Throw random niche stuff in their for added attractiveness, edit it in such a way that it can't be cut up into bits for various web site streams/downloads, and you might have something truly worth buying.
I'm all about the niche content. Those are the people I want to give my money to- the little(r) guys who need my dollars and who are kind of fighting to promote non-mainstream porn/aesthetics. The fact that you can't get it elsewhere for free tends to really make me open my wallet fast.
Quality and a company's mission are also big ones for me- I'm much happier to part with money to a site like Kink.com than another BDSM site, just because their values appeal to me immensely.
Features are fun, but truth be told, I'd rather VOD stream-rent them for extremely cheap and then, if I like it, buy the DVD. It always seems like you're taking a chance with features.
It sorta goes along with community, but I think branding goes a pretty long way in terms of places that I would give my support. I'm planning on buying the popporn DVD when it comes out because I like those guys' approach and think they deserve the cash. Quite honestly, I'd do the same damn thing if fleshbot were ever to put out a series. (hint hint)
Gonzo is the only way to go. Features tend to place too much emphasis on a stylized version of intimate time when just getting down to the grind is what most people just want. All the other options for viewing porn have pricing issues that need to be adjusted before they replace the DVD format we love know and love.
You kinda forgot professionally produced internet porn (videos). I don't really pay for features because the prices are exorbitant (I'm not paying more for a porn DVD than I would pay for a Hollywood movie. Just no. I'll go watch softcore instead). But I will pay $25 a month for a website (network) that produces that produces at least 20-30 hours of content in that month, plus access to hundreds or thousands of hours of already shot content, all of which I can keep on my computer (or burn to DVD, if I'm so inclined) even after I stop paying membership fees.
@hodayathink is running for president of Naughty...: I agree 100%. When I was a member of the Reality Kings network (before it was called such), I downloaded stuff I still haven't watched... and I was getting it all for $15 a month (special deal post-preview). Nowadays, these sites get the big-named pornsters (even Nina Hartley did some Bang Bros. content), so aside from the contract "stars," a member of one of these sites isn't missing anything. Hell, most of them even have story-like set-ups.
I tend to pay for decent 'plot driven' feature types more than anything. I've tried others and it feels more of a rip off for the price that the DVDs go for. Some of it has terrible acting but at least for us they seem to work the best.
VOD and other stuff has challenges, as sometimes when the internet connection isn't working right in the bedroom it kinda ruins it, and I don't like re-paying for content I've paid for the first time. The quality has got to be at least DVD level on a 15 - 20" display too. A lot of VOD type stuff is heavily compressed and 320x200 quality.
id pay for all of it, although i dont. i was going to buy my first porn dvd just last week, looked at the prices and laughed and went to download instead.
@Lux Alptraum: I'm still a DVD guy when it comes to porn, having only subscribed to one online porn site in my time. I either get my review copies on DVD or I "price shop" on adultdvdmarketplace.com. I love that site, since I also sell DVDs there, but always find great deals on all DVD releases. DVDs in your normal brick & mortar can run $40, but I bet I can find the same title on ADM.com for $15-$19.
And I love the DVD presentation, the packaging, having the glossy photos of the girls and action contained within, plus menu options, trailers and BTS. I'm the same way with mainstream film, call me old fashioned, I like a presentable collection of what I like!
@Brian47: I'm a presentation geek as well, but I refuse to pay more than $20 for any mainstream movie (one of the reasons I only own 2 Blu-Rays at the moment), and by extension I refuse to pay more than $15 for any porn DVD.
@Lux Alptraum: I guess I see myself as getting more enjoyment out of a mainstream movie in 1.5 hours than a porn for 5 minutes. There may be the very rare case of a porn that's good enough as a movie that I fit place it in the other category instead (for example, I'd probably buy the Pirates Blu-Ray at $16-17), though. That, and I'm like the only person I know that's into hardcore porn that can be just as easily aroused by good Skinemax-style softcore porn, so it's not a necessity if I need to get my production-value arousal on.
Also, as far as all-sex and gonzo type features are concerned, no way I'm paying that much unless I know I'm going to love all the scenes. Which is why I like the website subscription model more. I'd actually subscribe to Digital Playground's website, for example, before I'd buy any of their non-story DVDs.
@Lux Alptraum:
ya, i did purchase one month at nightcharm and was very pleased with their service. i still found it was still too expensive to continue but would think about buying again with a price drop, even if they thinned the content.
@hodayathink is running for president of Naughty...: I also like to know that I will be getting a great DVD for the price, which is why I love the reviews at adultdvdtalk.com - and write them too! But I tend to be someone who revisits favorite DVDs and certain scenes, so for me I just like owning the title and having it in my library to turn when in the mood.
It's kinda like spending the money on those DVD sets for Star Trek, Lost and Coupling (UK). I can watch any episode I want when in the mood, it's why I invested in them, and for me it's the same with owning the Big Wet Asses and Ass Worship series...
