"Matinee" Prevails Over Censorship

Last week, we reported that Jennifer Lyon Bell's "Matinee" had been banned from the Melbourne Underground Film Festival due to sexual content. This week, we're happy to report that, in spite of the ban, "Matinee" still took home an award.

Though the film was unseen by festivalgoers—the organizers deemed a civil disobedience screening too much of a risk—the official jury decided that it warranted the prize for "Best Short Film." It may not be quite the dramatic crumbling of Australian censorship that we were hoping for...but it's still nice to see Australians standing up for their right to view sex on film.

Too Hot For Australia: Erotic Film "Matinee" Banned From Film Festival

Abby Winters isn't the only one to raise the ire of the Australian government. "Matinee," an erotic film by friend of Fleshbot Jennifer Lyon Bell, has been banned from the Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF).

What made the film banworthy? Why, nothing more than "sexual content" (which is apparently so dangerous it must be kept from the Australian people at all costs). MUFF has appealed the film board's decision, and may even go through with a "civil disobedience screening."

Our thoughts go out the freedom fighters at MUFF—we wish them the best in their fight for free speech down under. (And if they could maybe see to it to get the powers that be to view Fleshbot in a more kindly fashion, that would be pretty swell, too.)

It could have been so sweet: Julia Yalovitsyna was on the shortlist for the "best job in the world"—until her webcam girl work was discovered (see her in action in the video).
