Now, we're not going to pretend that this list is in anyway definitive. First of all, it's based on Alexa rankings, which should always be taken with a very large grain of salt; secondly, it's not clear what, exactly, was used to determine a website's altness (God's Girls, which some might happily include in the genre, is nowhere to be seen on the list, despite having an Alexa ranking that trumps all but that of SuicideGirls—and don't even get us started on Zivity).

But, all that aside, we have this list, and so we might as well use it to tell you a bit about some of the world's foremost altporn sites. Who knows, you might just find your new favorite thing!

SuicideGirls: Though SuicideGirls was hardly the first alt site to hit the web, it was one of the first to garner massive amounts of attention. The combination of hot young tattooed girls, beautiful photography, fancy social networking tools, and some really slick marketing and branding all combined to make one hot site. Years of success have also meant years of drama, including a whole host of models who accuse SG of not treating them well. Some also argue that the focus on adding more and more models has diluted the site's quality (then again: nearly 2000 models!).

Burning Angel: The brainchild of Fleshbot Supreme Commandress Joanna Angel, Burning Angel brings all the best in sexy punk girls, hot hardcore vids, and all the online community you could want on a porn site. Also, Joanna Angel (nuff said, we should think).

Crazy Babe: Photographer Bob Coulter shoots just about every alt model you could ever hope to see naked, including more than a few who've earned the coveted Crush Object^TM title. However, all the photos are shot by Bob Coulter, who shoots in a dark, distinctive style. If you don't like his photos, you probably won't like the site.

Gothic Sluts: One of the first sites in the Blueblood Network, Gothic Sluts features goth girls... in the nude. Over the many years they've been in play, Forrest Black and Amelia G. have tapped some of the finest fetish models we know to appear in their work.

Lazerbunny: Along with Burning Angel, Lazerbunny is one of the few alt sites to break the hardcore barrier and go, you know, deeper. More than a few lovelies are featured on the pages of Lazerbunny, including, yes, the one and only Fleshbot Supreme Commandress Stoya, who was a Lazerbunny contract star in the days before Digital Playground snapped her up.

Broken Dollz: The founders of Broken Dollz wanted to make a porn site unlike any other—they ended up with one very much like all other alt sites. We'll forgive them that, however, as long as they continue to shoot hot models... naked.

Razor Dolls: Razor Dolls had photos, movies, softcore, hardcore, Stoya—and yet they haven't updated in over a year, so, uh, they might not be your first choice for new favorite thing.

Supercult: Though Supercult was one of the original alt sites, launching around the same time as Suicide Girls, it never quite rose to the same prominence as some of its siblings. However, now that alt legend Apnea is in the mix, perhaps that will change.

Erotique Digitale: A collection of photos by photographer Kelly Lind, who—like Bob Coulter—has attracted some of the finest models we know. Dana Dearmond, Jana Cova, Joanna Angel, and, yes, Stoya... need we say more?

No Fauxxx: Self-described as porn made by ladies, artists, and queers, No Fauxxx is a truly alternative "alt" site. Featuring every body and every gender, it's a porn site like no other. Or at least no other that we've seen.

The Semi-Retirement: When some girls quit the business, they just quit one part of it. Take Lexi Bardot, for instance, who may have left Porn Valley but who still creates online content. Wich is something we're extremely grateful for.

The (Very) Brief Exit: We were heartbroken when Belladonna announced that she was going to be retiring from the hardcore life due to an STD scare Thankfully, we weren't heartbroken for very long: less than a month after that announcement, she was back in the saddle again, which is exactly where we like to see her.

The Higher Calling: When Jesus calls, porn stars answer — at least when those porn stars are Crissy Moran and Erica Campbell, who left the jizz biz for the Jesus biz. We tried telling them that looking at them naked was a different but equally valid religious experience, but they chose to take a different path anyway.

The Very Public Exit: Who could ever forget Jenna Jameson? And who could forget her announcing, in the thick of the 2008 AVN Awards, that she "would never spread [her] legs for this industry again"? Hey, if you're going to quit porn, you might as well do it in front of a live audience comprised of a lot of the people who made you a star in the first place.

When The Past Comes Calling: Sometimes, even webcam girls get the blues (and the urge to quit): Tiffany Teen was driven to quit the life of a barely legal webcam girl after pictures from her high school yearbook were posted online. Sometimes, the past should stay the past (especially when it scares pretty girls away from being naked.)

Committing Suicide: With all the drama that's gone on at alt megasite SuicideGirls, it's not surprising that they've inspired more than a few creative (and dramatic) exits, including the one time near thirty models quit at once. For sheer style, though, we'd like to single out Flux, who managed to quit with a pretty piece of prose that tugged at our heartstrings. And let's not forget Dia while we're at it.

As a veteran of altporn, this makes me cringe; but as a veteran of altporn, I also know she's right.

When I was a wide eyed nineteen year old with a digital camera and a dream, it was a different story: someone like me could (and did) start a porn site — one that, free from the pressures of the corporate world, could explore different territory from mainstream porn. But the dream is dead, kids. If you want to be in the online porn scene these days, you've got to have cash — and as a result, "indie" porn ain't so indie anymore.

So what changed?

· The Visa/MC crackdown. A decade or so ago, starting a porn site was easy: you got some web space, you took some naked pix, you found a billing agent to process your membership fees ... and then you sat back and waited for the money to roll in. But in fall of 2002, Visa and Mastercard decided to end the party. Declaring adult sites to be a high risk for chargebacks, they started requiring a registration fee to process payments for adult sites: $750 up front and $375 annually after that. While that's not big money for a large company, it's a substantial hit (and deterrent) for a small startup. (Bonus fact: The Visa/MC processing fees are the reason why you can't use PayPal to sell adult-themed products. So when PayPal cancels your account after it finds out you're selling used panties ... well, at least now you'll know why.)

· Stricter 2257 regulations. If you want to pose naked on the internet, you need to be 18 or older — and if you want to post naked pictures of other people on the internet, you need proof that all the people you're posting pictures of are at least 18. This used to be a relatively simple matter of getting an ID and a release form from everyone who modeled for you. Then the government decided to step in and make things a little more complex: claiming that they were fighting the evil menace of child porn, they started requiring vastly more complete (and complicated) records for online models. If you're a small company running a multi-model site, 2257 record keeping requirements (which require publishing a physical address online where those records can be inspected and keeping regular office hours so the DOJ can show up on your doorstep whenever they want to) can be brutal.

· That big bully, SG. You've heard about the lawsuits, you've heard about the exclusivity contracts, you've heard about how they basically "own" a big chunk of the altporn market. Even though they didn't invent the genre — there were lots of folks getting naked on the internet altstyle long before they launched, including me — they basically dominate the scene now: and they don't appreciate it when other companies try to take them on. And most of the time, their intimidation tactics work.

· In many ways, "Alt" isn't really alternative anymore. When I started taking it off online, it had yet to become a hipster pastime — it wasn't considered cool, and I didn't gain cred (at least not with anyone I knew in person) for doing it. Flash forward to 2004: SuicideGirls is mainstream, emo girls aspire to be porn stars when they hit 18, and a whole lot of people are looking to cash in on the next new thing in porn. Hence Hustler bankrolling a Burning Angel movie and Vivid launching Vivid Alt. Tattoos and piercings in porn used to signify a product that was female-friendly, feminist, and (dare we say it) empowering; now it's just another wrapper for the same old product.

This isn't to say that any broke kid with dreams of becoming a porn mogul can, if given the chance, launch a progressive porn site even a radical feminist could love. But as more and more barriers to entry get put up — economic, legal, or otherwise — fewer people are able to enter the market; and those that do are unlikely to risk their bankroll trying to create and promote a different kind of porn. Which, at the end of the day, may be the reason why the most progressive porn site I've seen in recent years comes to us from Australia.

First things first: How old are you?
ZS: I'm (finally) celebrating my 21st birthday January 18th.

Let's go over your extensive list of tattoos and piercings. Where do we start?
ZS: Well, I have my nose pierced as well as my antibrow, my tongue twice, my gauged ears, my belly button, and both sides of my outer labia.

How many tattoos do you think you have?
ZS: (laughs) Oh fuck I don't know. I have one behind my right ear that says LOVE and one behind my left that says LUST. I think my favorite one is the one I put right above my pussy which says "I will take your breath away."

That's nice of you to give the ladies something to read while they are down there. What's written on your backside just above your butt crack?
ZS: "Dream as if you will live forever. Live as if you will die today."

Where does that come from?
ZS: James Dean. Which is your favorite tattoo of mine?

I'd say either the words "Doll Face" on your knuckles or the lotus on your elbow run a close second to taking my breath away. How old were you when you started getting tattooed?
ZS: I was seventeen.

That's not legal is it?
ZS: Well I grew up in Las Vegas, so I was pretty much running wild from an early age.

So what was your path to becoming a nude model and Suicide Girl?
ZS: It all started when I slept with a stripper. It was right after my eighteenth birthday. I was sleeping with this chick and then I became a stripper.

What was the name of the strip club?
ZS: The place was such a hole in the wall dive that I'd rather not say. I don't want to show them any love.

Tell us about this great love that influenced your life so profoundly?
ZS: I wouldn't exactly put it like that. But her name was Vanessa and she was nineteen. She got me dancing, which was cool.

What was your stripper name?
ZS: I went by Rhea. I was dancing for a while and I came across Suicide Girls and it seemed like a good idea so I contacted them through their website with a few photos and they wrote back to me the next day and that was it. A few days later I was shooting my first set for them. It's really not a complicated process like a lot of people think.

What's it like to be under contract to Suicide Girls?
ZS: It's amazing. They fly us places to hang out with people and shoot and host parties and go go dance. They flew us to Des Moines Iowa to a rock club and then people came to see us. I've been down to Mexico City to go go for Adler's Appetite which is the old drummer of Gun's and Roses. We did the CAPTIVITY party in Los Angeles for the release of the movie. They keep us busy.

Who are some of your favorite Suicide Girls right now?
ZS: Inga is a total sweetheart. Tanna. Posh. Sash. Lucy. That's a good enough list.

Since then, what else have you done?
ZS: Well, because I work with Suicide Girls I've gotten to be on "CSI New York" and a bunch of other shows. CSI just came out on box set and they have a whole big behind the scenes section which is really cool.

What did you do on the show?
ZS: We're doing a mock photo shoot, like a fake Suicide Girl shoot. I'm up on the counter of a diner pouring a milkshake over myself. I get to spout off a couple of lines then somebody dies and we get fifty gallons of blood dropped on us at one point. It was total shenanigans.

Which season and episode is it?
ZS: It's season three and the episode is called "Oedipus Hex". You can look for it on IMDB.

Tell us more about some of the shows you've been on.
ZS: I've been on "Curl Girls" on the LOGO channel, E!'s "Sexiest Jobs In Hollywood", and MTV's "Next". Right now I'm on the cover of Nathan Strause's new erotic film called "Vignette". He does a lot of fetish photography and he's been Andrew Blake's assistant for a long time.

Have you ever shot for Andrew Blake?
ZS: I stop at penetration on camera. That's my line.

Who are some of the other erotic photographers you've worked with?
ZS: I've worked with Nathan Strausse, Richard Avery for Juliland, Ken Marcus, and I've done stuff for Justine Joli. We just had an eleven page layout of us run in Don Juan, which is a Columbian magazine. I'm also on her site, JustineJoli.com. I've also been the centerfold for Taboo from Hustler. That was back in July.

What was the set like?
ZS: Since I don't do penetration on camera I did play piercing, where I had a seven-inch spinal needle put through both of my nipples on camera and then corked at the end. And I had piercings going through my back that had feathers on them so it looked like I had wings pierced into me.

Who does that?
ZS: My piercing guy is named Mathius. I met him at the Bondage Ball a couple of years ago. I'm into fetish, if you can't tell.

You're into women as well. Tell us about that? Did you discover you were a lesbian early on?
ZS: I don't know if I would say early on. It took me a long time to sort out being a teenager and trying to figure out what the fuck is up from down. It took me a while to figure out that I was attracted to women. Once I did sleep with women it was a different story.

You've said that you can count the number of guys you've slept with on your fingers?
ZS: Oh yeah. It's not that many. As a joke I recently sat down and started piecing together the number of women I have been with and then it became serious. It was a good experience for me to get an idea of how many women I've been with.

Have you ever thought about keeping a private blog about the women you sleep with?
ZS: Well a lot of my friends are people that I've dated so that wouldn't work.

How solid is your status as a lesbian these days?
ZS: I haven't slept with a guy in over three years now.

So what about the line from "Chasing Amy" where Jason Lee insists that every lesbian in the world needs deep dicking?

What can a girl do to impress you if she wants to date you?

What's the worst job you've ever had?
ZS: I was a paper delivery girl in Vegas once. It's so hot and you're running around throwing papers at peoples houses. That sucked. Plus I cleaned houses for a while.

ZS: A 2005 Hyundai Tiberon. It's black. It's the first car I've ever had.

If you could be driving anything what would you drive?
ZS: I'm not good with years or anything but it would probably be an older Mustang. Something at least two decades before I was born. I love American muscle cars.

What's next for Zoli Suicide?
ZS: I'm working on shooting with some new photographers. I want to work with Suze Randall, Dave Naz, Octavio Paz. I want to work with Siege and be in Strip Las Vegas Magazine. I want to do more print work. With alt modeling and being in between the lines of porn it's more difficult to chart a course in your career. It's risqué and it puts you in a box. The jobs you get are so random. Your goals keep changing because you're bouncing around. With SuicideGirls you aren't allowed to have a paid site. At the same time it's not like I'm going to go out and shoot for Maxim because obviously having tons of tattoos puts you in a very limited position. It's hard to have a set goal.

No stranger to legal brouhaha, those wacky kids at SuicideGirls are at it again: this time, they're suing the photographer known as Lithium Picnic, who was largely responsible for creating the SG "look" in thousands of photographs on the site and who worked for them until last November but now shoots with former SG model Apnea(pictured) and therefore is now considered an altporn competitor which is a violation of his SG contract. Get all that? It doesn't matter, because all you really need to know is that Lithium Picnic has been working hard since we last checked in with him and has made quite a few tasty updates to his site, including many new photos to peruse. He's also selling some exclusive prints in order to raise money for his legal defense. Since we aren't lawyers we can't really weigh on on whether the lawsuit is a valid one or not, but with all the squares who are down on porn these days it would be nice to see a little more harmony in this business we call adult.
