It's Just "Content"—But It's Really Hot

Eon McKai has said that his latest feature "Content" is altporn's answer to the recession. We'd offer, additionally, that it's Eon McKai's answer to gonzo porn.

"It's just content," we (and the performers) are repeatedly told. Translation: this is just stripped down sex. There's no plot, there's no "meaning," there are no grand conceits (well, aside from the general conceit of this being a stripped down, bare bones, sex-only release, which is certainly played up knowingly). Granted, this is not just another gonzo release: Eon's signature style is ever present. Even when it's just "content," it's style Eon's content.

So how does Eon's work fair when it's nothing but content? Quite well, actually. Eon elicits stellar performances from each and every cast member: from the almost-possessed Kimberly Kane, who shot "Content" after a month of no sex; to the playfully rough Madison Young and Dane Cross; to the top-notch final scene featuring Kitty "Meow" McMuffin and Sherwood getting rough and nasty with each other.

The sex in this release tends towards the rougher end of the spectrum: spanking and slapping abound, and there's a bit of namecalling and cockchoking thrown into the mix (the violence is not solely directed towards the female cast members, however: some of you will no doubt be pleased to learn that Madison Young gives Dane Cross's face a nice, hard slap). But unlike some releases, where this kind of affectation seems put on, a bit of a performance, most everything we see in "Content" feels extremely real.

There are a few moments throughout the film—particularly in the scene between Kimberly Kane and Mr. Pete—where it almost seems as though the performers have forgotten the camera. In those moments, where it feels like the performers are fucking more for themselves than for us, there's a true bit of porn greatness. It may be just "content"—but it's achieved a level of intimacy most porn only dreams of.

The Revolution Will Be Capitalized: "The Doll Underground" Release Party

Plucky emo upstart-turned-media magnate Eon McKai regaled a small but dedicated gathering of erotic counterculture types and fellow oligarchs on a chilly spring evening in opulent Highland Park last night at a party celebrating the release of his foray into post-Marxist pornography, "The Doll Underground". You could have been there too, but you probably weren't; see what you missed after the jump.

Despite the exhortations to "rise up" contained in the title being feted, those present at "The Doll Underground" release party seemed to openly mock the very suggestion of class warfare and sexual redistribution of capital as they nibbled on truffled foie gras and quaffed liberally from Waterford crystal flacons of 1995 Chateau Margaux. After showing up to the party in his custom Hummer stretch limousine, McKai exerted a Svengali-like hold on starlets Lexi Belle and Reagan Maddux throughout the evening, never allowing reporters to approach them directly and openly dictating their responses to them instead.

Also spotted at the gala were such prominent members of Old Los Angeles society as Ed Fox, Dave Naz, Ashley Blue, Zack Sabbath, Mandy Morbid, Kimberly Kane, Carlos Batts, and April Flores, all of whom listened in rapt attention as McKai described the splendor of his new palatial estate in Cap d'Antibes while feeding mouthfuls of gold leaf-encrusted cake to three or four waifish models inked from head to toe in "rebellious" tattoos and splayed at his feet. Later, after a shower of $1000 bills descended from the ceiling of the Little Cave upon the heads of the delighted guests, a Vivid Alt-branded personal helicopter spirited him away from the festivities. What will he think of next?

When we say that you might forget that you're watching a dirty movie during the first several minutes of Eon McKai's new hallucinatory agitporn masterpiece "The Doll Underground" — all recycled stock footage and fuzzy credits and screeching filmstrip soundtrack — that's meant as a compliment; McKai has never made porn movies that look like anyone else's, and while there's something to be said for the straight-up smut style of your typical gonzo production, that's probably not why you watch one of his films in the first place. So even if "The Doll Underground" isn't likely to win over any existing alt-haters to his camp, we think it's the best example yet of why McKai remains one of the most singular and distinctive artists working in the adult industry today.

Early reports about the movie, which has been over a year in the making, described it as a story about tutu-clad suburban Gothic hotties being recruited for some sort of anti-capitalist terrorist cell. That's true enough, we guess, though the finished project is a lot more disjointed and impressionistic than that: if "The Doll Underground" is "about" anything, it's that sex is as much about power as it is about pleasure, maybe even more so. From our eminent colleague Violet Blue's five-star review:

Pulsing with energy, eerie visuals, clever pacing and deliberate editing, the film is a haiku telling the story of five young women tired of being controlled by society ("buy nothing" is repeated as a mantra) who emulate a mashup of the Weather Underground and Patty Hearst's SLA ideals. They band together in the Belmont Tunnel in Los Angeles under the direction of uber-sexy goth Lorna Adorn (Pixie Pearl), create and distribute anti-capitalist and anti-conformity propaganda (podcasts and screenprint pasteup art), build bombs and make things go boom ... Visually and throughout the delivery of the minimalistic story arc, it plays like a long, gorgeous, lush yet also somehow dark, saturated but bleak music video.
(... ) I wonder, did The Doll Underground *actually* come from porn valley? There are no blondes, no long fingernails, no fake breasts, no skinny girls, no big boobs, no fake female orgasms. The soundtrack never interrupts the sex; the sounds of sex are the focus. The women's bodies look like regular *hot* girls; the have ass, thigh, meat on those bones that make you want to cuddle and fuck and snuggle. Half the cast, at most, is tattooed; many are pierced, and two of the men are uncut. There are no unsafe or scary sex acts; no anal, no "gapes" and thankfuckinggawd no ATMs. The negative? People still wear white belts.

But let's talk about the sex; the mood is disaffected, the visuals dream-like, but the sex is riveting. Besides Pixie's solo masturbation scene (a Goth dream come true), the performers do not acknowledge the camera during sex scenes — with one deliberate exception. Outside of sex, the performers have direct viewer "eye contact" as part of the narrative. The storytelling is for the viewer; for the sex we are but voyeurs. The editing is tight yet deliberate.

(... ) The Doll Underground is one of the best porn films I've ever seen, and it feels like anti-porn — it's almost against the system it came from by being all that it is — a deep investigation of culture from an industry we regard as being utterly bereft of culture beyond the superficial. Rise up, indeed. Highly recommended.

We couldn't have said it better ourselves, except maybe to add that "The Doll Underground" is one of those rare porn movies that we find ourselves watching as much for the interstitial parts and high style as for the fucking itself ... although once we remember how hot the fucking is, we find ourselves wanting to fast forward to that again too. It might not be everyone's cup of dirt pipe milkshake, but if you're looking for an utterly original porn experience that'll leave you with something more than just a sticky feeling in your pants, "The Doll Underground" is the place to be. Anti-capitalist gothic Lolitas never looked so good.

The band Dallas is coming to town, and Debbie and her friends will do anything to get at the frontman (except, in most cases, act).

The latest of the recent "Debbie Does Dallas" resurrections, Eon McKai's version telegraphs his love for toes, indie bands, and mopey teens, mashing them up with the first non-alt girls of his career.

An altporn reimagining of the 70's porn classic "Debbie Loves Dallas", Eon McKai's version is not going to make any converts to the altporn stable of stars, all of whom do an amazing job of telegraphing how not seriously they take their jobs. The eye rolling, gum smacking, and bad posture, the delivery of every line as if it had a question mark at the end of it, and the relentless irony of the performances made me think less like I was watching a porn movie than I was substitute-teaching an eighth grade class.

All except Cassidey, who plays Debbie. The bad seed Vivid Girl (or so she is depicted in the Showtime/World of Wonder "reality" series "Debbie Does Dallas .. Again"), Cassidey alone seems to be making an effort to do her best with what is admittedly a porn script.

She and her pals (DeArmond, Stokely, and Pearl) meet at a music video shoot playing listless cheerleaders. They take a break and hang out with local ticket scalper/drug dealer Deeze, who takes a shine to Dana.

"I'm from East Los Angeles," he says. "So far east I have a New York accent."

Back at Debbie's place, Cassidey makes James Deen fuck Pixie as punishment for not cleaning the apartment. I don't understand Altkid anthropology; if Deen had cleaned the house, would he have got to fuck Pixie twice?

Regardless, a good sex scene is always a welcome departure from bad acting, and a lack of dialogue takes one's mind off the poor sound. We can hear the "record" button being pressed each time a performer speaks.

Meanwhile, we meet Punky of Dallas, whose mating dance seems to be the constant readjustment of his glasses. We are treated to Dallas' music video, a trippy interlude that puts Punky in Deen's place fucking Pearl.

A story element is added that the girls are fighting. Stokely versus Cassidey over Punky. Cassidey tells Stokely that the loser in their struggle will have to "go back to making porn in the Valley." (At this point I suddenly felt defensive of the Valley. "Well, these girls don't seem so together, either," I thought).

The groupies crash a recording session and Pearl and DeArmond hook up with the backup musicians. It's like "The Wall", except with MySpace bands. Two headscratchers of porn pseudonyms are featured in this scene: Julius Ceazher and Icarus Corpse. If I was 12, Icarus Corpse would be my band.

Down the hall, Cassidey and Stokely try to find Punky but are blocked by his bodyguard.

"I'll introduce Punky to the one who sucks the best cock," the bodyguard says. (Shouldn't it be "sucks cock the best?") Anyway, they blow him, but he betrays their trust. It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll.

A surprise visit by Monique Alexander from Paul Thomas' recent "Debbie" reimagining is every bit as exciting as when Gary Coleman did a cameo on "Silver Spoons" as Arnold Drummond. It is the Vivid contract girls who deliver the most inspired performances in this movie.

You might say, "But Dana DeArmond is the new Thinking Man's Porn Star, and Charlotte Stokely was the face of suburban blight in 'Girls Lie'! How is it that cookie cutter contract girls are so refreshing in this movie?"

Probably because the script was unequal to the talent of these people. At that point it became a personal choice whether to let the audience know. Cassidey made me forget the script; Dana drew attention to it.

In the end, Cassidey gets her man. Punky, played by Alex Gonz, and Cassidey provide a sweaty and messy ending to the movie, real porn as opposed to metaporn, which is a welcome relief. Still, we could hear an offstage voice yell "Two minutes!" as Gonz worked up to his pop shot. I asked McKai if things other directors might smooth over - like stage directions - were included purposely in this movie.

"Truth to materials," he said, quoting the architectural fad that prohibits gussying up building blocks. If that is true, why not have a split screen at all times showing what the crew is up to? What about a CNN news ticker or real-time L.A. traffic reports that would give insight into conditions on the set? Sometimes I think Altporn means never having to admit you're phoning it in.

Eon McKai, who held out for the deep pockets of Showtime's "Debbie Does Dallas...Again" series to finally show his face, will show it again Thursday at 6 p.m. alongside that of Dana DeArmond, who now has a magical home made of Lucite thanks to the deep pockets of appreciative fans.

The pair will make an appearance at Baltimore's Sound Garden, a used CD store that cleaves to the altporn credo (credo TBA). 100 lucky altporn consumers will then get tickets to the exclusive afterparty in the city's alty Fells Station area.

Popshots of the Week: "Eastside Story" Edition

"Eastside Story", a colorful fuckfest directed by Vena Virago, was feted at a bar in downtown L.A. last night, attracting a group of characters not usually seen at porn parties. That is not to say that trendy New York-style hipsters unafraid to let their gray hair show are necessarily better than other people, but they are often better at making out than you'd think. We asked cub photographer Eon McKai to help us out with the Popshots this week, because he knows all the angles.

We begin with the delightful Page Morgan stranded outside because she is not old enough to drink, the poor thing. (I stayed outside as long as I could until I began to feel untrue to my nature.)

Breaking: Debbie Still Doing Dallas

Had we not squandered all our savings on making sure we had a limitless supply of phat tacos here at Fleshbot Central, we might have been able to afford adding Showtime to our basic cable lineup this month and therefore would have been able to catch the premiere episode last week of "Debbie Does Dallas ... Again", World Of Wonder's new seven part documentareality show about Vivid's latest remake of the 1978 porn classic (which has already spawned nearly two dozen sequels and ~~rip~~spinoffs, but that's perhaps the subject for another post). Fortunately, we can still catch up with the goings-on via producer Chris May's updates on the WOW Report blog, which include on-the-set reports and video clips—though we might have to find a friend who's more flush than we are and tune in tomorrow night to witness the introduction of new character Eon McKai into the mix, who one adult industry publication has called "one of the most influential porn directors of all time" and who we really should start paying more attention to around these parts. Who knows—this kid might be going places!
