There is so much unnecessary hype in porn that when someone like Rocco Siffredi comes out of retirement because he can't resist someone like Bobbi Starr, it's a shame when so little is made of it.

Siffredi channels Randy Newman in both his love of L.A. and in boxcover font choice for his stateside comeback extravaganza, "Rocco Ravishes L.A.," in which "The Stallion" and a troupe of foreigners (Mark Davis, Marco Banderas, and Tony Ribas) are violently serviced by Starr, Dana DeArmond, Adrianna Nicole, Jamie Elle, Lexi Love, Jada Fire, Kagney Linn Karter, and Kristina Rose.

One of the persistent myths about any porn, but particularly this type of clinical, graphic, and forceful material, is that the women in in don't like it. While this is certainly true some of the time, it is most often not the case, and we can see this in scenes with Starr, Karter, and Adrianna Nicole, in particular.

Faye Reagan Learns Her Lesson: "Reform School Girls 4"

When we think of reform school our minds fill with gauzy visions of plaid skirts and white stockings and wayward yet innocent young girls rebelling against everything their strict teachers have taught them by indulging their nubile, lubricated young bodies into all sorts of Sapphic contortions. (Either that, or the sight of Wendy O. Williams in a cropped t-shirt and Sybil Danning standing guard with a shotgun. But we'd rather concentrate on the plaid skirts and lube.) Sorry, where were we again?

Oh, right, that new Wicked movie: this "Reform School Girls" sees director Mark Stone returning to helm the fourth and most magical installment of the series yet, in which tender young miscreants including Aiden Starr, Kelly Skyline, Aubrey Addams, Cara Dee, Dana DeArmond, Mackenzee Pierce, Sindee Jennings and newcomer Faye Reagan get exactly the kinds of lessons they deserve.

Problem is, these girls never seem to learn their lesson: in fact, it takes more than a few spankings and stern discipline to shape these troubled teens into a state of docility. Luckily their instructors are dedicated and passionate educators who never give up on their students—if only we had teachers like that, we might not have wound up working in the world of vice ourselves. Then again, if we hadn't you might not be sitting here looking at Faye Reagan getting fucked in a plaid skirt, and then where would we all be?

Whether you want to donate to the Evil Angel legal defense fund or spend 10 glorious, disturbing, jaw-dropping, delightful, and carnivorous hours with the likes of Belladonna, Sasha Grey, Sandra Romain, Eva Angelina, and Tricia Devereaux (or, I imagine, both), you will love "Defend Our Porn."

In April, 2008 Evil Angel founder and director John Stagliano was indicted on obscenity charges in the type of case that has become familiar to First Amendment watchers who are also porn consumers: several Evil Angel titles, as well as trailers for a Belladonna movie, were obtained in a United States county in which "community standards" seemed rigid enough to bring charges of obscenity. In 2009 the case will likely go to trial.

Notwithstanding (of course) that the titles in question arrived by request of someone over 18 years of age, as they did in dozens of more lenient counties throughout the United States, Stagliano now faces an expensive legal battle in a season that has also seen court cases against the more extreme JM Productions and Max Hardcore.

"Defend Our Porn" is a compilation DVD of scenes from every current Evil Angel director, as well as alumnus Jules Jordan. And it also features a brand new scene with Tricia Devereaux, Stagliano's wife. Proceeds from the 16-scene, 10-hour, 3-DVD box will defray Stagliano's legal bills.

What is remarkable about the Evil Angel case is that, though the company is undeniably hardcore, it is less so, and far more arty, than the year's other porn defendants. A case against Evil Angel bodes ill for more mainstream adult companies.

So, as both a compilation "Best of" DVD and as a statement of rights, "Defend Our Porn" starts with a bang in a scene with the irrepressible Nacho Vidal from "Fashionistas Safado: Berlin". No male performer can hold a candle to Nacho in the talking dirty department. "Why did you come here with underwear?" is one of his gems. Melissa Lauren handles this onslaught with fear and aplomb.

Then veteran director John Leslie presents a scene with Naomi. This scene is reminiscent of mid-90's porn and Naomi is definitely the type of model who embodies that vibe and is beloved of fans of that era. Naomi, I am required to say, has an amazing ass. With it she coaxes a load from James Deen that I expect he is still proud of.

In an outdoor scene from Rocco Siffredi's "Rocco's Way to Love," (I'm hoping this is a translation), Kelly Stafford performs in a headlight-lit gangbang. It reminded me a little of "Rebel Without A Cause" if that movie had ended the way I wanted it to.

"Do you want to see the throat fucking doctor?" a game Sasha Grey is asked in "Face Fucking Inc.," a departure from the grainier previous scenes. What sets this scene apart is the Porn Valley-ness of the proceedings, clothing, and lighting, but Sasha Grey lends the scene star power and makes it memorable. Really, porn is about the people.

Nacho then returns with Avy Scott in a scene that would have been creepy even without the monkey.

Disc Two includes part of Belladonna's return to guys, "Cock Happy," as well as an Eva Angelina gangbang in which the 2008 AVN Best Actress is used most jubilantly. Mia Rose appears in a scene with Manuel Ferrara that establishes her as the anti-Teagan. Unlike the harder-looking or more Euro-style Evil Angel performers, the diminutive Rose is all Porn Valley, but uncharacteristically self-aware.

Disc Three includes a performance by The Unsinkable Sandra Romain (on a spotless beige rug). Belladonna returns deliciously in a scene from Jules Jordan's "Ass Worship," and, in the set's one original outing, Tricia Devereaux comes out of retirement for a clothespinny scene with Derrick Pierce.

"I told you I was in love with my husband," she says.

"That's not what we're talking about, is it?" he says.

Of all the great, blitzkrieg excerpts in "Defend Our Porn", this final segment takes its time and benefits from it. Devereaux was nervous about this scene. She's older, she's put on some weight—all the things that make women uncomfortable, even in (or especially in) porn. But she looks great, of course, and, much as it is a signature pleasure watching all the teenagers flying around on the other discs, to watch grown women Romain, Belladonna, and Devereaux get (and give) the business in Disc Three is a real payoff.

"Defend Our Porn" is a fundraising effort but it is also a loadblowingly good value for all the diverse, quality porn it provides.

Porn Star Halloween Spectacular(s)

Despite appearances to the contrary, Halloween really isn't among our favorite holidays here at Fleshbot. Maybe it has something to do with the kind of costumes everyone assumes we're interested in, but we've always thought that by dressing up as a sexy-fill-in-the-blank every October 31 you're basically admitting that you're not sexy the other 364 days of the year. Which is sort of sad when you think about it.

The band Dallas is coming to town, and Debbie and her friends will do anything to get at the frontman (except, in most cases, act).

The latest of the recent "Debbie Does Dallas" resurrections, Eon McKai's version telegraphs his love for toes, indie bands, and mopey teens, mashing them up with the first non-alt girls of his career.

An altporn reimagining of the 70's porn classic "Debbie Loves Dallas", Eon McKai's version is not going to make any converts to the altporn stable of stars, all of whom do an amazing job of telegraphing how not seriously they take their jobs. The eye rolling, gum smacking, and bad posture, the delivery of every line as if it had a question mark at the end of it, and the relentless irony of the performances made me think less like I was watching a porn movie than I was substitute-teaching an eighth grade class.

All except Cassidey, who plays Debbie. The bad seed Vivid Girl (or so she is depicted in the Showtime/World of Wonder "reality" series "Debbie Does Dallas .. Again"), Cassidey alone seems to be making an effort to do her best with what is admittedly a porn script.

She and her pals (DeArmond, Stokely, and Pearl) meet at a music video shoot playing listless cheerleaders. They take a break and hang out with local ticket scalper/drug dealer Deeze, who takes a shine to Dana.

"I'm from East Los Angeles," he says. "So far east I have a New York accent."

Back at Debbie's place, Cassidey makes James Deen fuck Pixie as punishment for not cleaning the apartment. I don't understand Altkid anthropology; if Deen had cleaned the house, would he have got to fuck Pixie twice?

Regardless, a good sex scene is always a welcome departure from bad acting, and a lack of dialogue takes one's mind off the poor sound. We can hear the "record" button being pressed each time a performer speaks.

Meanwhile, we meet Punky of Dallas, whose mating dance seems to be the constant readjustment of his glasses. We are treated to Dallas' music video, a trippy interlude that puts Punky in Deen's place fucking Pearl.

A story element is added that the girls are fighting. Stokely versus Cassidey over Punky. Cassidey tells Stokely that the loser in their struggle will have to "go back to making porn in the Valley." (At this point I suddenly felt defensive of the Valley. "Well, these girls don't seem so together, either," I thought).

The groupies crash a recording session and Pearl and DeArmond hook up with the backup musicians. It's like "The Wall", except with MySpace bands. Two headscratchers of porn pseudonyms are featured in this scene: Julius Ceazher and Icarus Corpse. If I was 12, Icarus Corpse would be my band.

Down the hall, Cassidey and Stokely try to find Punky but are blocked by his bodyguard.

"I'll introduce Punky to the one who sucks the best cock," the bodyguard says. (Shouldn't it be "sucks cock the best?") Anyway, they blow him, but he betrays their trust. It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll.

A surprise visit by Monique Alexander from Paul Thomas' recent "Debbie" reimagining is every bit as exciting as when Gary Coleman did a cameo on "Silver Spoons" as Arnold Drummond. It is the Vivid contract girls who deliver the most inspired performances in this movie.

You might say, "But Dana DeArmond is the new Thinking Man's Porn Star, and Charlotte Stokely was the face of suburban blight in 'Girls Lie'! How is it that cookie cutter contract girls are so refreshing in this movie?"

Probably because the script was unequal to the talent of these people. At that point it became a personal choice whether to let the audience know. Cassidey made me forget the script; Dana drew attention to it.

In the end, Cassidey gets her man. Punky, played by Alex Gonz, and Cassidey provide a sweaty and messy ending to the movie, real porn as opposed to metaporn, which is a welcome relief. Still, we could hear an offstage voice yell "Two minutes!" as Gonz worked up to his pop shot. I asked McKai if things other directors might smooth over - like stage directions - were included purposely in this movie.

"Truth to materials," he said, quoting the architectural fad that prohibits gussying up building blocks. If that is true, why not have a split screen at all times showing what the crew is up to? What about a CNN news ticker or real-time L.A. traffic reports that would give insight into conditions on the set? Sometimes I think Altporn means never having to admit you're phoning it in.

This Week In Porn Reviews: What (Not) To Watch

We sift through so many awful-looking porn movies in our screener pile here at Fleshbot that we generally prefer to spill our ink on only telling you about the good ones (unless, of course, the movie in question happens to have a high profile star on the cover or unless the title or concept is too good to pass up whether or not the DVD is actually worth watching.) Our hats (and pants!) are off, then, to Eros Zine's Thomas Roche, whose admirable sense of curatorial responsibility made him turn in some penetrating reviews this week of not only the good (Evil Angel's "Cock Happy") and the surprising (Naughty Flipside") but also the fair-to-middling (Vivid's "Breakup Sex") and the just plain awful (Matt Zane's "Tattooed And Tight"). After all, life's too short to waste your time on watching bad porn; kudos to Thomas for at least making writing about watching bad porn into an art form unto itself.

If it isn't abundantly clear by now, one reason for our abiding crush on Dana DeArmond is that she doesn't act like a pornstar, or at least not how a lot of people think pornstars are supposed to act like; she really is just a regular kinda gal. (As a more poetic type than we are might have put it, "If you prick her, does she not bleed?"—though given the context, maybe that's not the best choice of quotes.) Feel-Good Porn Movie Of The Summer: "Naughty Flipside 1"

This movie features my personal Power Station, Cream, and Damn Yankees of porn: a tasty cast in a series of scenes that progress literally from dark to light (or at least from brunettes to blondes) as well as back in time, to when porn was more often fun and less-often so goddamn serious.

Director Brett Brando put together a sequence of vignettes with setups that are just a little more complex than other gonzo movies, each playing to the strengths and whimsies of the people performing them. I can't think of a recent movie that was better cast with people I like, or that seemed to target my personal tastes as well.

Further, the progression of scenes was particularly thoughtful, as we will see.

Sasha Grey is a mopey teen. She wakes up in her makeup in a squalid Hollywood apartment. Her dialogue sounds like a bad MySpace page. "Sunset Strip?" she grouses. "More like Sunset Drip."

At this point I was ready to fast forward, because there was nothing to suggest this wasn't another of the breed of self-important Sylvia Plath porn scenes that was only funny unintentionally.

But then a biker enters in a cloud of dry ice and fucks her "hungry pussy".

The sex itself was just what we would expect from the precociously dirty Sasha Grey, who knows the lingo and delivers it poutily, as is the current fashion. But the scene is just slightly wacky, and it is that intent that makes it fun to watch.

The first scene is also the darkest of the movie.

Next comes Satine Phoenix as a restaurant manager who is having trouble with the help. Before she can fire her insubordinate employee, however, he tells her that what she really needs is to be fucked.

Even though we know this to be universally true, from diners to the Vatican to the International Space Station, it still seems a little uncomfortable to hear it, like a hoary porn trope that is part of the shorthand but still off-putting and past its welcome. That changes when Phoenix pulls her handyman over the bar and takes control of the scene.

The third scene is the most surreal and, when I take advantage of my Constitutional right to create an adult awards show, I will nominate Pinky Lee as Best Actress for her portrayal of a showgirl who fucks someone else's fan. The scene is silly and bittersweet, and Lee actually tap dances.

Then Dana DeArmond intercepts the man who has been surreptitiously leaving mash notes at her door.

"I know you!" she says sweetly. "You're my boyfriend!" Indeed it is her boyfriend Daniel, and their chemistry is apparent. Both act like they feel lucky.

Finally, Adrianna Nicole and Lorelei Lee, two punky blondes who can get up to some real graphic nastiness in other movies, are seen here braiding each other's hair in a superbly kitschy pink bedroom when both realize they are dating the same guy.

They spring a trap for Tommy Pistol, who plays a Brooklyn doofus.

It's not as if this movie was directed to the hilt, or stage managed to the nth degree. It is instead often wonderfully sloppy and improvisational, and the players seem to be having a great time. This in turn makes me happy, because I like it when people enjoy their jobs. Because so much porn can seem negative, or not the zesty enterprise I think it should be, I realize that I am exactly the target audience for this sort of fun, bubbly movie.

"You cad," Lorelei Lee ad libs.

"Did you call me a cow?" asks Pistol, and Lee laughs out of character.

The three end in a menage a trois-cum-pillow fight, free of "Come fuck my hungry pussy" and super-serious lines of that ilk. The movie makes you wonder what the sixth scene might have been had there been time for one. Naughty Flipside is the feel-good movie of the summer!

(Also, if the guy from Prospero's Books had been in it, it would be the Gielgud movie of the summer.)
