Diamond: A New(ish) Ivy League Sex Mag

One Harvard alumnus has the drive to tell us what we already know about sex. And charge us for it.

When we first discovered Diamond's website, we fell in love with the upbeat attitude the founder/editor-in-chief, Matt Di Pasquale, takes towards sex and sexual expression. He writes, "To repress or limit your sexual desires, keeping them to yourself, is to hold back a natural part of your being... So, by restricting the flow of one type of emotion, you naturally condition yourself to prevent the flow of other kinds of emotions like happiness, love, sadness, and joy."

But when Diamond's pilot issue came out, it was less about sex than it was about sneakers. The only skin to be seen belonged to the founder, and he wasn't exactly working it. In his ten-page spread, he flaunted both his penis and his high school AP scores (guess which impressed us most).

But with their first official issue, Diamond's managed to release official naked pictures of students from around the country. The articles—penned by students at Harvard, Barnard, Princeton, Yale, and other prestigious locations—are more sex-centric than before, and feel earnest and straightforward. So is it better? No.

Boston University, Cambridge, Columbia, and even Harvard have already jumped on this bandwagon, sometimes even giving the goods up for free. Now, we're not saying we're tired of college sex magazines (it's real, legal nudity and naughty talk), and we are happy to the models get paid a decent amount for their time, and we do respect Diamond's to branch out to other universities. But asking us to pay $9.99 for a digital issue (or $29.99 for a print copy) is just silly. Trust us: we downloaded the free sample version. The sample should be enticing, and it wasn't.

At the end of the day, Diamond's just another college sex magazine in a sea of college sex magazines—more a piece of a hay in a haystack than a, ahem, diamond in the rough. Publications like Boink and H-Bomb understand that when readers approach an Ivy League-generated nudie mag, they expect a certain bit of self-conscious tomfoolery. Dormitory antics, suggestive sororities, TAs with T&A, and nerdy babes wearing nothing but mortarboard caps are all things we hoped to find in Diamond, and we were disappointed by their absence. We genuinely like the kids and what they're trying to do. Here's hoping the next issue has a little more sparkle.

"Naked States": Beauty Is In The Eyes Of The Beheld

It is hard to contextualize, much less sexualize, photographer Spencer Tunick's quest to photograph larger and larger groups of nudes in various (re)poses, but the documentary "Naked States" proves that it is the models themselves who define the project.

Now available on iTunes, "Naked States" is a road movie with several hearts.

For five months in 1997, Tunick crossed America with the goal of photographing nudes in each of the contiguous 48 states. From Presque Isle, Maine to Los Angeles, Tunick was able to either cajole (Fargo) or corral (an unruly nudist colony) his models, each of whom seemed to have a different idea of what the point was.

Tunick himself comes across as less interested in the humanity than in the art, and less interested in the art than in the art magazines which had at the time shown little interest. But his models, like the woman in Boston who thought of her public nudity (recovering from a mugging and rape) as therapy or the Phish fan who joined hundreds of like-minded subjects supine on the tarmac of a former Air Force base as a war protest, are what makes this documentary like a very fleshy "Travels with Charley."

Maybe Tunick is a publicity seeker (he recently broke a record in Mexico City's Zocalo by getting 18,000 people to disrobe), but the reasons his subjects cite for taking their kits off are deeply personal, from the 65-year-old man who knows how he will look exiting the world to the woman posing on the New Jersey side of New York Harbor, pre- the towers falling, talking about the power of public solitude.

So, since neither Tunick nor his strangely killjoy girlfriend, nor his producer nor his attorney (the great Ronald Kuby, who can still spit the word "cops") ever refer to any of the models as "hot," I felt bad thinking that the woman from Madison or that vintage clothing store employee looked pretty tasty. But the way Tunick arranged them said "naked" more than "nude," so he achieved his goal.

The documentary follows a pattern of Tunick's surprises, both pleasant and not. He feels personally endangered at the Sturgis bike rally (the owner of a Klanware t-shirt concession is incensed at Tunick's proposition to his daughter), has a difficult time with crowd control at a nudist colony and Phish concert, and ends the movie with his coveted gallery showing and wide exposure in the art world. We are surprised that he has only been arrested five times.

Ultimately what makes this documentary compelling is how much of America we see, and how there seems to be a fortuitous disconnect between photographer and subject, in which each walks away from the shoot with something different.

Because I am base-minded and low, I was not able to walk away, for I had an erection.

A Night At The Carnaval

Always the adventurer, our friend and beloved photographer Autumn Sonnichsen recently hit the set of a Brazilian porn production, where a Carnaval-themed production was being filmed. Amidst the chaos, she was able to snap some beautiful behind the scenes photos, capturing the action as only Autumn can (and, even better, she was nice enough to share them with us!).

André Maleronka, Autumn's partner in crime, reports:

The subgenre of carnival-themed releases has ended up somewhere between commonplace and mandatory for the Brazilian porn makers. The producers had an idea that was more or less interesting: to use the help of amateurs in the middle of the action who would register themselves per email or by phone. Other than that, everything would go per usual, with couples of small groups of professional adult actors giving their all – or not – in front of the cameras, while extras would emulate the carnivalesque euphoria and a group of samba drummers would provide the music.

You had to sign a model release at the entrance and they were handing out multi-colored condoms, as well as bandanas (for the men) and baby tees (for the girls) emblazoned with the logo from the production company.

To say that it was interesting doesn't mean that it was any good. The stars of the evening were AVN winner Monica Mattos and Alessandra Marques, dressed as samba dancers, and the Mercenária do Funk, that did a lot more than samba dancing. Monica, looking gorgeous, wandered through the hall and took advantage of the open bar. Alessandra Marques did samba dances on a little stage above the main floor. The Mercenária did all kinds of acrobatic moves including the splits on the confetti-covered dance floor while she gave one lucky fellow a blow job.

Even the swingers from the suburbs couldn't do much about the bizarre atmosphere emanating from the young amateurs – appropriately described by an onlooker as "the worst of the sketchy guys that you avoid in the clubs"- completely drunk and trying to look like professional fuckers. Nobody revealed themselves as a great talent for the cameras and we didn't get turned on in the slightest.

Columbia Students Create New Sex Magazine, Change World

Because we are old (and have some affiliation with Columbia University), we remember the first time Columbia students banded together to form a "new erotica review," one that seems to have completely folded after a mere two issues. But, college students being college students, the failures of the past are hardly likely to deter the pioneers of the present: and so, just this month, a new "new erotic review" has been born up at the Alma Mater on the Hudson shore.

C-Spot—which, at the very least, wins points for its name—is a self-described "work in progress" that seeks to cover a great deal of territory. Seemingly no area is off limits: the first issue features articles on vibrators, nude modeling, strip clubs, and internet porn (as well as the requisite selection of art nudes); and the letter from the editor promises much, much more (interviews with pornstars and sex workers! Sex party reviews! Sexpert Q&A!). It's all very young and earnest, and—jaded as we are—we half suspect it'll burn out after an issue or two. But hey, who knows? Maybe this time, it'll actually work. We certainly wish them well.

We've never been totally clear on the distinction between porn and not-porn, especially when it comes to incredibly arousing photographs of insanely lovely, delightfully diverse, and happily naked girls. So since Belgian photographer Emmanuel Poncelet decidedly presents his work as not-porn, we'll just have to take his word for it. Photographer Frank White Brings Our Favorite Babes To Life

Frank White is a man after our own heart. Not only do we dig his clean and sharp photography style, and his website overflowing with copious galleries of beautiful women (although we don't dig the autoplaying music), it seems that he deals almost exclusively with the buxom British lad mag girls we've come to know and love. It's a rough life, but someone has to photograph it and upload to it to the internet so that rest of can enjoy it vicariously.

Howard Schatz Is A (Naked) People Person

The portfolio of photographer Howard Schatz is filled with fashion models, boxers, pregnant women, swimmers, and even clowns—but like the people in them no two photos look alike. Either through funky lighting, bizarre makeup, dunking his subjects underwater—or just being all up in their face—he makes each portrait intimate and unique. And while he's not exclusively a nude photographer, it's clear that Schatz admires the curves and contours of human flesh and enjoys capturing it in as many ways as he can. We guess that means we have something in common—only in our case "capturing" means "eagerly staring at."

Robert Wasinger's Ghostly Nudes

This gallery of figure studies from Robert Wasinger looks almost like the creepy slides that people try to pass off as photos of "real ghosts." Only ... the ghosts are naked women, so they aren't really all that scary. Playing with light and focus can add neat effects to your art, but he's not fooling us. His house isn't really haunted with beautiful dead models—although we think we saw that movie on cable one night and it was pretty hot!

Amanda Com: Nude Photography Done Nice And Easy

Sometimes the best thing you can say about a photograph is that it doesn't look like other photographs. We can't quite define what it is about the images from this photographer's portfolio that made us do a double take—other than the fact that they just feel different than the usual art nude fare. Maybe it's the sexy Brazilian models and how they seem so casual about licking strawberries or maybe pulling a gun on you. The work is both slick and relaxed in that "polished amateur" way that we like a lot. Plus, she goes by the name Amanda Com, which makes us feel like we're at a really sexy comic book convention or something. That would certainly be different!

There are actually several galleries of quality naked photographs to choose from, because why limit yourself to just one when you could have many, many nudes all in the same place? That's just logic talking!

But why quibble?
