"Naked Truth"

2005_12_15_nakedtruth.jpg

Indian culture isn't generally known for its tolerance of nudity or even public displays of affection; you're not going to find a lot of kissing in a Bollywood flick, much less explicit sex. But according to a recent series in the Hindustan Times examining naked imagery in Indian history, advertising, and popular culture, that attitude may be changing. While most of the accompanying photo galleries from the series don't actually show much by way of full-on nudity (though there is one set devoted to pictures of bare female backs, which is sexy if not exactly transgressive), a collection of artsy black and white photographs by Prabuddha Das Gupta does break the nude taboo. We're probably not going to see a Penthouse-style Kama Sutra photoset in the Times' weekend supplement anytime soon ... but maybe it's just a matter of time?- J. West/JD
