Vampira!

edwood_vampira.jpg

Had Maila "Vampira" Nurmi ignored her own concerns of "professional suicide" and accepted Ed Wood's casting choice for her to appear as the mysterious Madame Heles in "Necromania", film audiences everywhere might've gotten a closer look at her, er, talents:

About two months later I got a phone call ... This beer-guzzling type guy said Ed wants you, and then he proceeded to tell me what the thing was. "You're layin' in this coffin, you got nothin' on ..." I was stunned, and all I could say was. "You know, I can't walk." He said, "That don't matter, you can still sit up, can't ya?" He said, "You ain't got nothin' on, you're in this coffin, and you sit up." I think my jaw was hanging open. He said, "Yeah, and this guy jumps on you, he says, 'Aaarooow!'" ... So anyway I told him I wasn't interested. "Miss Garbo isn't working, I think she can probably sit up better than I can."

(- Maila Nurmi as quoted in "Nightmare of Ecstacy: The Life and Art of Edward D. Wood, Jr." by Rudolph Grey, 1992)
