Vivid Goes To South By Southwest

SXSW: a conference for edgy filmmakers, internerds, tons of bands you've never heard of, and... pornstars? Strange as it might seem, Vivid will be hosting a panel (and party) of their very own.

The panel—a part of the SXSW Film Festival—is called "Vivid Entertainment –The Sex-Driven Market," and will, presumably, be as much a commercial for Vivid as a deep discussion of the adult industry:

For 25 years, Vivid Entertainment has not just dominated the adult film industry, it has played a major role in shaping the evolution of home distribution from VHS and DVD to Internet and Blu-ray. CEO and founder Steve Hirsch will discuss how the video distribution landscape has developed over the years and what's in store for the changing marketplace. The discussion will also address the increased mainstreaming of adult film as well as its role as a training ground for Hollywood filmmakers and professionals.

But at least it'll be a commercial featuring Meggan Mallone and Hanna Hilton. Who are we to complain about that?

Because we feel we've known Sasha Grey all our lives, we are sometimes surprised that not only was she born in 1988, but also that her 21st birthday is not until next month.

Grey greyced the opening of a 25th anniversary retrospective of Vivid Video photography at production company World of Wonder's Hollywood Blvd. gallery. The retrospective, which runs through March 13, features framed boxcovers and art through the Ginger Lynn era through today, each under its own year.

Vivid was also celebrating the debut episode of "Deeper Throat," which premiered on Showtime this weekend. The latest of W.o.W.'s fictive depictions of the house that Hirsch built, "Deeper Throat" weaves a tale of the re-making of "Deep Throat" (starring Grey and the Women of Vivid) and Vivid's struggles with Arrow Releasing, the Vegas-based company that owns the rights to the original.

Vivid had been around for five years before Grey showed up on March 14, 1988. Makes us wonder.

With Vivid a MILF and Grey almost drinking age, our ingenue selves can't help but ponder the loss of our own barely-legalness.

Look, we know the Adult Entertainment Expo is full of—gasp!—boobs, and there's porn playing everywhere... but trust us, it's a real trade show—and if you want to cover it, you should have your shit together.

Say, for example, that you really want to ask some popular pornstars what their favorite videogames are. Great idea! What you should do, then, is get your press credentials set up way in advance of the show, contact the relevant studios to set up appointments for interviews, and have at those pornstars when the show rolls around. What you should not do, however, is skip out on CES, run over to AEE on the busiest day, and expect pornstars to fall all over themselves to answer your questions while they have a full line of excited fans waiting to talk to them. Employing that second strategy will more than likely lead to find that your favorite pornstars are too busy to pander to you or completely unavailable.

You wouldn't expect a mainstream star to drop everything just to talk to some random press person—so why should Lisa Ann?
