SuicideGirls Gets Spanked

2008_02_11_sg.jpgWhile SuicideGirls.com seems to have had something of a side business of suing folks over the last couple of years, that business hasn't always been as successful as their main stock in trade: in their latest defeat, alt smut site God's Girls prevailed in a suit in California, which nullified the highly unpopular two year noncompete clause in the standard SG model release. We're still waiting to hear what comes of Lithium Picnic's case, but since it was filed on the same grounds we'd guess he's probably breathing a big sigh of relief right about now.

  • I meant to post this Monday, when it would have been relevant, but "non-compete" clauses are not uncommon in media. I still recall the famous 'it's in the bag' ad campaign for the TMJ4 weather-team in Milwaukee; in the early/mid nineties, the NBC affiliate poached the top meteorologist from the ABC affiliate, but couldn't put him on air for two (?) years. Consequently, the local NBC side promoted his presence on the weather-team with group shots of the other three meteorologists with faces exposed, plus John Malan with a paper-bag over his head.

Of course, I'll grant you that erotica &/or pornography is not local news, but just as TMJ & ISN are kindred media, I would say that SuicideGirls & GodzGirlz (two 'z', no?) have like enough motif to warrant "no competes". (Let's call SG Mad, to GG's Cracked. Note, too -- I was always a Mad reader; Cracked was retread Alfred E. junk.) Just my two cents, though.

    I'm not a judge... BUT O I SEXY.
